It seems like women all around me are sharing the great news that they are expecting. While I am happy with four children and have no plans to have any more (okay, the hysterectomy may have helped me make that decision), I have to admit that I get a little twinge of jealousy when they make the announcement. I mean, they are embarking on the most exciting thing that can happen to a woman! There are a lot of benefits to being pregnant too: people are extra nice to you; you can be completely unreasonable and everyone allows it; you can eat all of the ice cream you want without too much guilt; and you can buy a whole new wardrobe.
When I had my first child, 19 years ago, shopping for maternity clothes was not fun. I could buy pastel t-shirts with giant arrows and “Baby on Board” messages…not exactly what a young woman wants to wear…or loud floral print dresses that could fit four pregnant women inside of them. The maternity underwear looked like parachutes and the huge elastic panels in the front of all pants were oh so sexy.
Thank goodness those days are over! Today women have so many cute and fun options for maternity wear. Pants are made to sit beneath the tummy and the huge elastic panels are no more. Gorgeous dresses are made with empire style waists so that the expectant mommy can look elegant and beautiful.
