Back to School on a Budget

With four children, a new school year can be expensive, especially when one of those children is heading to college! Thankfully, there are some cost saving benefits to having several children too.

The most obvious benefit to having several children is that you can pass clothing down from one child to the next. Since we have a slightly unusual family dynamic, that hasn’t worked out from Eric to Kellen because the fashions changed a lot in 11 years…not to mention that I didn’t save very many of Eric’s clothes because I didn’t think I would have more kids. However, Griffin is well stocked in clothing for years to come because I have packed away most of Kellen’s clothes for him.

Since hand me downs don’t work for Kellen and Avery (she is all diva and boy’s clothes won’t do), we need to do some back to school shopping. I save money on back to school clothes by watching for two for one deals, shopping the clearance racks and using store discount cards.

For other school supplies, I buy in bulk to save money. I hit the warehouse store last week and bought a huge package of pens and pencils that will be enough for all of the kids, and Mom and Dad too! Eric needs a lot of things for the dorm, so we have been setting aside household needs and school supplies for a couple of months. Planning ahead is definitely a must when you want to find great deals! If you wait until the last minute you may end up paying top dollar.

And remember…it’s the most wonderful time of the year!
