DHA and Omega 3’s are an important part of a developing child’s diet. They support brain, eye and heart health, and are found primarily in fish. Since children often don’t like to eat fish, it can be hard to make sure they get enough DHA in their diets.

Fish oil is high in DHA because fish feed on marine algae. I give my kids Omega 3 supplements, because I believe that it is very important to their health. My kids can be really picky about what they eat, so I try to make their favourite foods contain more of the things that I feel are important, like DHA. Here is a recipe that I often make in my home.

Oven Baked Macaroni and Cheese


  • 3 cups uncooked elbow pasta
  • 2.5 cups grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup Horizon whole milk with DHA
  • 1 cup cream cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp dijon mustard
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1 tbsp corn starch
  • 1/4 cup bread crumbs
  • crumbled bacon

I keep tomatoes from my garden in my freezer for cooking with, because when I defrost them the skin pulls right off and they basically disintegrate in whatever I am cooking. If you do not have this option, puree your tomatoes.

Set your oven to 350 F. Boil water and cook the elbow pasta. In a non stick pot, mix the milk, cream cheese, 1/2 of the grated cheese, the dijon mustard and the pureed tomatoes. Add the salt and pepper. Once the cheese is melted, add your corn starch to some cold water, mix it and then add it to the cheese mixture. Stir until it thickens.

Put your cooked elbow noodles in a casserole dish, and stir the sour cream and the remaining grated cheese in with the noodles. Pour the cheese mixture over the noodles. Do not stir.

Sprinkle the bread crumbs and bacon on top of the casserole and bake it for one hour.

It’s ready to eat and save for leftover too! This serves 8 people, and if you want to add a little something to it, you can include chopped ham or broccoli in the casserole.
