On New Year’s Eve, my family and I gathered up our warm clothes and set off to the Toronto Zoo for their New Year’s Eve Countdown. It was a mild night, and just perfect for being outdoors for an extended period of time. I have visited the Toronto Zoo many times, but this was my first visit in the winter, and my first visit at night…so we were excited to check it out!

When we arrived, there was a performance on stage right at the entrance. We watched the singing for a few minutes, but the kids wanted to go see the animals, so we moved on. The paths were lit up by animals, which was fun.

We had a chance to visit some of the Zoo residents up close, like this camel who was relaxing and letting everyone pet him. We also had close-up visits with some birds, and a donkey, who was hanging out with Shrek!

Griffin was still upset about missing the penguins when we visited the Zoo in the fall, so we were hoping to see them, but unfortunately they had already gone to bed for the night. He got over it a bit when he saw a polar bear though.

It was pretty dark at the Zoo, and there were gates blocking off many of the paths. I’m not sure if that was because it was dark and late, or if the animals from those sections of the zoo were not there in the winter months, but we did get to see several interesting animals like the tigers, the rhinos, and many other animals inside of the buildings. The kids explored a teepee and felt a tiger skin, a polar bear pelt and a snack skin. The zoo staff explained that these pelts came from animals who had passed away at the zoo and are now used as education.

Eventually we made our way back to the entrance and danced to a musical performance, before watching the countdown on the big monitors. We all yelled out the countdown with them and sang along to Auld Lang Syne as we finished off the evening. It was a lot of fun and great to ring in the New Year at 8pm when the kids were awake enough to enjoy it!

We will be heading back next year when they hold the 10th Annual New Year’s Eve at the Zoo!
