Last week I was invited to Louisville, Kentucky with 14 other bloggers to learn about KFC. Kentucky Fried Chicken is part of Yum, along with Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. I worked at Pizza Hut for many years, and they also use fresh ingredients, so I was not surprised to learn that KFC makes their chicken fresh each day, but I guess there are a lot of people who are not aware of this, and KFC is spreading the word.
All chicken on the bone at KFC is prepared from fresh, not frozen, chicken. It arrives to the store fresh, is stored in proper refrigeration, prepared fresh each day (with a pressure cooking time of 18 minutes) and served fresh.
KFC believes in transparency. They face opposition from PETA, and told us about some of the claims being made, and they referred us to their website for the facts about the chicken used in their restaurants. They answered our questions and concerns and assured us that KFC suppliers do not use growth hormones on poultry, and that they do not use chickens that have been mistreated. Their suppliers work with primary breeders who provide poultry specifically selected with health and well being in mind. Click the link above to learn more about the chickens they use at KFC.
I also learned a lot about KFC as a company and the philanthropic work that they do. We learned about Colonel Sanders and how he was a generous man who liked to take people under his wing (pun intended!) and teach them all about the business so they could run successful KFC franchises. He was even known to give away franchises to promising candidates with nothing in return.
Colonel Sanders passed away from pneumonia at the ripe old age of ninety. His legacy of giving continues through the Colonel’s Scholars Scholarship program. They give away 75 scholarships a year, and have had creative entry methods, like tweets or photo entries. I love that the company cares about people and offers these scholarships, and even takes part in reuniting families.
Take a look at this video that shows a bit of our experience…
Overall, I had a great time and learned a lot about KFC. It is great to know that they are using fresh chicken, and I feel okay about feeding it to my children on occasion. I am also looking forward to hearing about the new recipes that KFC will be revealing from the memoirs and 140 recipes of Colonel Sanders’ that were recently found…they should be interesting, and maybe the next great secret recipe will be discovered!
