Muskoka Woods is a co-ed summer camp located in the Muskokas that has been operating since 1979. Kids aged 7-17 visit the camp each year and have life changing experiences! Muskoka Woods started as a family business by a husband and wife who wanted to create a place where their children and other kids could have first time experiences that were fun. As Christians their goal was to create a place for everyone. They believed that wholesome environments and fun experiences were the best way to demonstrate their love for God and service to families.
Muskoka Woods is situated on Lake Rouseau and aside from beautiful beaches, it has cabins, dining halls, meeting rooms, a Leadership Studio, a concert hall, guest lounge and boathouse. They also have tennis courts, two beach volleyball courts, a 15,000-square- foot indoor gym, 50-foot climbing wall, an 80,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor action sports park, dedicated gymnastics facility, the largest and highest ropes course in Canada, three playing fields and a golf training centre with driving range, putting green, and chipping green. It is definitely a state of the art facility with something for everyone!
I attended a summer camp as a kid, and the thing that I remember the most is the relationships that I built at camp. I made some incredible friends, and while many of them were only in my life for that week, I’ve remembered them forever. The counselors also played an important role. They were fun and supportive and always ready to lend an ear or play a game. As a kid, I appreciated being treated as an equal and as someone with value, not just as “some kid”. At Muskoka Woods, the camper to staff ratio is 2:1, which I think is amazing! Having one staff member for every two kids means that parents can rest assured that their children are being supervised, listened to and cared for…and those are very important things!
Guests at Muskoka Woods stay in clean, fully-enclosed cabins with bunk bed-style sleeping arrangements. The 7-9 year olds stay in cabins with up to 10 kids and two counselors. The 10-11 year olds also stay in cabins with up to 10 kids and two counselors, and the 12-17 year olds stay in cabins with 11 guests and one counselor. The oldest kids’ cabins typically include washrooms and showers, while the others are located a short distance from the washroom facilities.
Muskoka Woods offers many of the regular summer camp activities like horseback riding, water sports and biking, but they also offer many unique activities like cake decorating and photography that I will tell you more about tomorrow. It is truly a place where every child could find an activity to experience and enjoy.
Muskoka Woods also offers great food! Meals are served buffet-style three times a day, with additional snack times. Their buffet offers a variety of options including vegetarian meals, and they accommodate any special dietary needs. You can look at a sample menu here.
If you are thinking of sending your children to summer camp this year, Muskoka Woods is definitely a camp to consider. They have one of the best supervision ratios in North America, and a great variety of programs from water sports and athletics, media and arts, to leadership and team building.
