When I was younger, I used to think that camping meant days of eating nothing but junk food. I would stock up our food supplies with pop tarts, hot dogs and potato chips and of course, everything we needed to make the perfect s’mores. While I would never stop packing marshmallows and chocolate for our camping trips (that is as much a part of camping as a campfire afterall), I have learned to pack healthier food choices and this year I will be planning our meals while attempting to stay within my Weight Watchers points allowance.

Here are some healthy food suggestions for camping:

  • Fruit and vegetables (raw) – they’re delicious, great for snacking, and they require little to no preparation
  • Yogurt – buy a large tub because it has less waste and will be easier to pack in ice than several little tubs
  • Granola – a delicious way to get your grains
  • Fruit smoothies – make them at home and freeze them in sealed containers
  • Trail mix – nuts and fruit will keep you energized and feeling full
  • Peanut butter – just grab a spoonful when you need a little protein, or spread it on some celery
  • Cheese – it makes a great snack
  • Deli meats like sliced turkey or ham – lean choices will give you the protein you need without all of the fat
  • Chicken and fish – both taste great when grilled or made over the open fire
  • Veggies for grilling, like zucchini, corn on the cob, peppers, tomatoes, asparagus…anything you can wrap in foil and cook on the fire

I am a Community Leader for an online travel community called Around the Campfire which is hosted at The Blog Frog and sponsored by KOA Kampgrounds. Around the Campfire is a place to talk about all things camping! You can get tips and advice from other members, share your latest camping tales and take part in live chats with other members. Joining is free and all you need to do is jump in and take part in the conversation. I hope to see you there!
