Eight finalist have been selected out of over sixteen thousand Moms who were nominated for the Walmart Mom of the Year awards.
You can read the stories of these amazing women on the Mom of the Year website. I read through each one of them and I was really touched to learn all of their stories. There is a woman who, following the loss of her brother, pioneered a fundraiser that supports the Canadian Mental Health Association. Another woman is credited for donating one of her kidneys, and yet another who is a leader in education and fund raising for Cystic Fibrosis. I was probably most touched by Carol Westberg’s story. After being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2004, Carol underwent numerous treatments and procedures, and continues to battle the disease. While most of us would be complaining, Carol co-founded a charitable organization that has raised over $150,000 for research and advocates for drug coverage. She counsels newly diagnosed myeloma patients all over Canada, speaks to student nurses about living with an incurable disease and organizes charity events and conferences, all while fighting her own battle against the disease.
Each of the eight finalists will each receive $10,000 for personal use and $10,000 to the charity they have chosen. Plus, at the end of September a gala will be held to announce the Mom of the Year, and who will receive $100,000 for her charity! All of the nominated women are deserving of the final prize, and I can’t wait to hear who was selected.
The Mom of the Year campaign was so successful in it’s inaugural year that they have decided to do it again in 2013! So put your thinking caps on now and get ready to make your nominations next year.
