For someone like me, who has no sense of direction, a GPS is vital for me to get where I need to go. I recently went on a trip to California with my 9 year old son. I knew that I would need to do some driving around Los Angeles and San Diego, and without my husband to do the navigating, I was a little nervous. Okay, I was a lot nervous. I knew I could rent a GPS from the car rental, but I had just received the TomTom VIA 1605 to review, and I already knew that I like and trust TomTom, so I brought that along with me.

TomTom announced the launch of the TomTom VIA 1605 TM in the North America market featuring the largest screen ever offered on a TomTom portable navigation device. The sharp, 6” screen with large buttons and menus help enhance the user’s driving experience.

“Safety on the road is an ever-present concern for today’s drivers,” says Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director Consumer at TomTom. “The unique design of the TomTom VIA 1605TM addresses that concern, ensuring that the interaction is easy and instructions are in clear view.”

The TomTom VIA 1605 TM, which comes with lifetime traffic and map updates, also features the popular super-slim design and integrated fold-and-go EasyPort® mount offered with the TomTom VIA series. This innovative mounting system allows for easy positioning of the device either on the windshield or the dash and the device orients the display with a useful flip-screen feature.

The TomTom VIA 1605 TM will be available for purchase at retailers starting in late May for $229 CAD. TomTom is also releasing a six inch navigation device, the TomTom Start 60, throughout Europe.

I realized when I got there, that it was a little risky to bring along a brand new, never opened, GPS to get me around a place that I’m not familiar with at all. But, it was too late to go back, so I got it out of the box, hooked it up and put in the address I needed. I was in Los Angeles and had to drive on a huge and busy highway to get to San Diego, and I was driving a car I wasn’t familiar with…it was nerve wracking!

I have to say, I love this GPS. Not only did it always keep me in the right lane and notified in advance of where I had to be next, it told me about traffic disruptions and gave me alternate routes to save me from being stuck in traffic. The screen is the perfect size so I could glance at it and see where I needed to be, and like my other TomTom, it told me when I would arrive and what speed I was going compared to the speed limit. When I got going a little too fast, it set off a little alarm warning me to slow down, lol.

I really like the touch screen, and that it has options for mounting it on the window or the dashboard. The free maps are a huge bonus too. I have a few GPS devices that I have used, and this one is definitely my favourite! You can take a look at this and other TomTom devices at www.tomtom.com.
