Share Your Camp Memories! Win a Week at Camp Too!

Summer is just around the corner and with it comes memories of summer camp. My sister went to Circle Square Ranch in Severn Bridge and I will never forget seeing the Western Town theme and the rodeo. It looked like so much fun! I was really excited when my turn came to go to Circle Square Ranch, this time at a different location (it is no longer operating).

WagonSmI loved my camp. We slept in covered wagons. We learned bare back horseback riding. We practiced vaulting on horses (standing, doing rotations and some of the braver campers even learned handstands on the horse). I learned that archery is tough but still a lot of fun, rock climbing is invigorating, canoeing is the most fun when you tip the boat and capture the flag is the most fun you can have in the woods.

Mealtimes were an adventure too. We tried new foods and practiced our manners better than at home! Who could ever forget the camp elbow song? “Sheri, Sheri if you’re able, get your elbows off the table!” followed by “Dance around the dining hall, dance around the dining hall, dance around the dining hall. Dance. Dance. Dance.” or something equally embarrassing, lol. Thankfully I never actually had that song sung to me, but it was sure fun to sing to other people!

Campfires were an incredible bonding time and a chance for reflection. I attended my first dance at Circle Square Ranch too. But the thing that sticks out the most for me is the friendships. It is amazing how much you can connect with others when you only know them for a week. The last day of camp was always bittersweet as we all said goodbye through our tears. Last year my daughter had her first experience at camp, also at a Circle Square Ranch, and when she shed tears on home day I hugged her tight and helped her gather contact information from her new friends. She is returning to Circle Square Ranch this year and she couldn’t be more excited! I’m excited to hear about it!

Did you or your children attend summer camp? What was your favourite part?

I hated summer camp. It meant that I had to be around strangers for a whole week and was forced into a schedule every day. I hated not being home with my family. It was a week I couldn’t play with my friends doing the things I enjoyed doing. Instead I had to do things adults thought we’d like. Hated it.

I attended Circle Square as a kid and absolutely hated it. Sending your kids to a place to learn “elbow” manners is ridiculous and something out of the 1950s…not to mention humiliating for ones who get chosen to dance around like a fool. Talk about passive bullying. Kids would rather be enjoying the summer with their friends at home instead of being shipped off to be with strangers in a unknown land.
