I have been using Stevia in place of sugar for over a year. I want to reduce the sugar in my diet but I just couldn’t fall in love with unsweetened coffee, and I didn’t want to use the popular artificial sweeteners because of their harmful ingredients. I discovered pure Stevia and started using it in it’s tincture form. There is a slight plant flavour with the Stevia that my husband did not like, and the tincture was prone to spilling (and it’s expensive, so you don’t want to lose any of it). So, when I was sent some Truvia to try, I was interested in how it would taste and work.
Truvia® sweetener is a great tasting, calorie-free sweetener derived from the best tasting part of the stevia plant leaf. It is approved by Health Canada for use as a tabletop sweetener and as a sweetening ingredient in certain food and beverage categories in Canada.
Truvia is made from stevia leaf extract, and it comes in a granular form that is much like sugar. I like one slightly heaping teaspoon of sugar in my coffee, so I can easily judge the sweetness of Truvia and other sweeteners by finding the right amount for my coffee. With Truvia, I needed one level teaspoon to equal the same sweetness as sugar. There is no plant taste or aftertaste and it mixes well in the coffee. It is suitable for Kosher and gluten-free diets too.
I didn’t have enough Truvia to attempt baking with it, but it did work quite well in my smoothies and tea as well as coffee. One of my lucky readers will win a Truvia Iced Tea Kit so they can try it out for themselves.
The winner will receive the tools and ingredients to make a refreshing pitcher of Truvia sweetener-infused iced tea. The gift pack includes a bright, summery pitcher, festive matching glasses, a mixing spoon and a lemon adorned tea towel. As well, they will receive Truvia – the brand new, calorie-free, naturally sourced stevia-based sweetener, both in packet and spoonable form. Also included is a box of Second Cup Jasmine Tea, which is a delicious blend of whole leaf green teas from China and India, and includes dried, fragrant Jasmine flowers.
