I always wanted to own my own home. I rented for a lot of years, and even though those homes were not my own I maintained them in the best way I could. When my landlords allowed it, I painted and replaced light fixtures and I learned how to do minor household repairs myself. I always dreamed what it would be like to be able to do these jobs in my own home.
My dream was realized ten years ago when my husband and I bought a new construction semi-detached home. We were able to choose the interior features like the floors, cupboards, counters and light fixtures so we have been fairly content with our choices. What we knew we needed from very early on was more space. Our basement needed to be finished and we had to build another bedroom, so we made those our first priorities. After that, we built a patio in the backyard ourselves, and worked at creating flower beds and vegetable gardens.
We are still working on the basement space, but now that a decade has passed we are also looking at some of our original choices and thinking about changing them. I would like to replace our patio with a deck and our patio doors with french doors. A nice tile would be wonderful in the kitchen and front hallway, and someday I would like to switch out our counter with a natural stone. Obviously these projects can be expensive so they will have to happen over time, but I am doing my research and looking at stores like Rona for prices and guidance. It may take several years, but I believe we will create our dream home in time. Our first big job is going to have to be replacing our roof, since it is showing signs of needing repair, but eventually we will move on to aesthetics and the upgrades we want to do.
Do you have a big list of jobs for your home too? What are you working on now?
