I bought my first car when I was 20 years old, and my father was sure to give me some advice on car safety and being prepared for anything. His advice has stuck with me over the years, and with all of the car trips people take during the holidays, I thought I would pass along his advice to you.

Words of Wisdom from my Dad:

  • Never let the gas tank be less than a quarter full
  • Get your oil changed every 5000 kilometers
  • Keep jumper cables, a flash light and a first aid kit in the car
  • Keep a candle and matches in the glove box
  • Lock your doors while driving
  • During the cold months, keep warm outdoor clothing and a blanket in the car
  • Always get your vehicle undercoated before the snow falls
  • Keep your washer fluid full during the winter months, and an extra bottle in the trunk

This was not my first car. It wasn’t nearly as nice.

If cell phones had been commonplace when I was twenty (yes, it was THAT long ago), I’m sure he would have told me to always have one with me on long trips. Here are some other tips of my own that I would add to his list:

  • Use a GPS, or at least have one available in case you get lost or need to find a new route
  • Keep a couple of bottles of water in your vehicle
  • Granola bars or another snack that has a long shelf life are great to stay in the car
  • Give yourself extra travel time for long trips, especially during the winter months
