2013 is coming to a close and it is a perfect time for reflection and remembering everything that happened this past year. It was definitely a year with it’s ups and downs! Here are our highlights from the year.
Eric finished the Police Foundations Program at Humber College and decided that law enforcement is not the career for him. I tried not to look too happy about that. He is working full time and planning to return to school in 2014. He also started dating a really lovely girl, Jayme, who was a good friend of his for the previous two years.
Kellen started the year off not feeling very well and grew progressively more ill as time went on. In March he was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and had a week long hospital stay that saved his life and changed how he will live from here on out. The year has been full of tests and hospitals and treatments, but things are looking much better and he’s living a healthier and happier life now. He started grade 5 in September.
Avery and Griffin started grades 4 and 1 respectively. Avery joined the knitting club, the cross country team and the Me to We club. I love that she gets involved and isn’t afraid to try new things. Griffin requires some extra help and since he is now in grade one he has therapy right at school, which means he has a new speech therapist, a new occupational therapist and a new physio therapist. He’s a busy boy and making great progress this year.
My husband started off the fourth year of his electrical apprenticeship with a bang, literally. He fell off of a ladder and broke both wrists and suffered a minor head injury. Months off of work, surgery and ongoing physiotherapy has been the extent of his year, but he is working again and should be almost as good as new sometime in 2014.
We welcomed a new niece, a new nephew and a new great-niece to the family this year. We celebrated with my Sister-in-law and new Brother-in-law at their wedding in November too. In June, Avery and I took part in the local Relay for Life in memory of our family members who lost their battles with cancer.
My husband and I started running, and ran our first official 5k at Disney World in October. With some help from my Father-in-law, his brother and Home Depot, we built a new bathroom in our basement. Frigidaire provided us with a new Induction Range too, and I’ve been cooking up a storm with it!
It was a great year for delicious food and recipes on Kidsumers! I had some recipes accepted onto TasteSpotting and FoodGawker and saw quite a bit of buzz on Pinterest too. You can view many of my recipes on my Recipe page: kidsumers.ca/recipes.
We were very blessed with some amazing travel experiences this year. In May I had the incredible opportunity to head to Disney World for the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. This conference is by invitation only and I was so honoured to be included. My daughter, mother and niece came along to experience the excitement and we made some magical memories.
June took me off to the TBEX conference in Toronto and in July our whole family was able to visit Wasaga Beach. My husband’s accident happened right after that trip, so we stayed close to home for the rest of the summer.
I was invited to attend the TMS Family Travel conference that took place in September in Niagara Falls, New York. It was an intimate group of travel writers in attendance and I had some pretty awesome experiences while there.
My husband and I celebrated our 11th Anniversary at Disney World where we ran the runDisney 5k and the kids took part in the kids’ races. We started our stay off at Global Resort Homes in a beautiful vacation house at the Windsor Hills Resort, and finished our stay at the Caribbean Beach Resort at Disney World. During our stay we visited Legoland and Universal Studios as well as spending several days in the Disney Parks. It was a nice warm getaway!
November ushered Avery and me back to Florida for a couple of days at Universal Studios before heading off on the Freedom of the Seas for a Caribbean Cruise. Our ship stopped in St. Thomas and St. Maarten and we experienced the beauty of both areas.
My husband and I finished off the year with a weekend getaway to Orlando, courtesy of Travelocity. We enjoyed the sunshine and theme parks and met some amazing people from all over the world. It was a much needed break!
There were several one day trips through the year too, and so many amazing experiences. you can see some of my trip photos on my flickr account.
Brands and Products
I have had the pleasure of working with some pretty incredible brands this year. Disney, The Children’s Place and Bissell have continued their working relationships with me and I am pleased to share them with my readers. I was introduced to some new brands this year too. Frigidaire partnered with Mom Central Canada and I was privileged to take part in their ambassador program.
Proctor & Gamble also has an ambassador program that I am a part of. They have been a pleasure to work with and I stand behind their great line of products. Hewlett Packard has some fantastic products that I was able to share with you this year too. It was a great experience to try a computer brand that I hadn’t used before, and I am a convert. HP makes great computers.
There are too many fantastic products to list them all, but some of the highlights include Kobo, Disney Infinity, Kenneth Cole luggage and LeapFrog. Take a look through my reviews to see all of the products I tried this year. I want to give a special thank you to Leap Frog for the toy donation they provided this year. It was donated to the Christmas tree for a child in need.
Despite some health challenges, 2013 was a pretty decent year. Kidsumers has some exciting things coming up in 2014 and I can’t wait to share them with all of you!
Happy New Year!
