Salad Recipe: Layered Salad

I shared my layered salad recipe once before, but I have tweaked the recipe a bit since then so I decided it was time to share it again. Previously I used fewer hard boiled eggs and less cheese, and my family has made it clear that they would like more of both of those things in their salad. I also said that the salad needs to sit overnight, and I no longer do that. This is my husband’s favourite salad and he wanted it one day so I made it and we ate it without letting it sit overnight…and we all liked it even more!

Layered Salad
Recipe type: Salad
Prep time:
Total time:
Serves: 12
This layered salad is perfect for holiday dinners.
  • 6 cups chopped iceberg lettuce
  • 12 hard boiled eggs
  • 2 cups frozen peas
  • 1 package bacon
  • 2.5 cups grated cheddar cheese
  • 2.5 cups mayonnaise
  • 25 ml sugar
  • 2-3 green onions
  • salt
  • pepper
  • paprika
  1. Allow the frozen peas to thaw in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. Cook bacon crisp and then crumble or cut into bite size pieces. Allow to cool.
  3. Mix mayonnaise and sugar in a bowl.
  4. Chop the green onions as garnish.
  5. Layer the following:
  6. Half of the iceberg lettuce, followed by a sprinkling of salt and pepper
  7. Sliced hard boiled eggs; followed by a sprinkling of salt and pepper
  8. Peas
  9. Half of the iceberg lettuce, followed by a sprinkling of salt and pepper
  10. Bacon
  11. Grated cheddar cheese.
  12. Mayo and sugar mixture, spread evenly over salad.
  13. Top with chopped green onion and paprika.

As you will see, I did not have any green onions when I made the recipe this time, so I garnished with chives and paprika. This salad is so well received in my family. I love that it gets more greens into my children!

Very much one of my favorite salads – it looks ‘fancy’ (for lack of better words) so great to take to potlucks over the holidays :)

Pinning! My mom and grandmother make a fabulous 7 layer salad but I seem to always put too much mayo on it, this looks very similar so now I know the right amount of mayo instead of feeling it out! :)THANK YOU!

I am happy you gave into the more eggs and more cheese request. I think your salad looks great and would be perfect just on it own. It looks great presented that way too. I would have never thought to put it in a nice clear bowl. I would have used an opaque serving dish. Lesson learned :)

I was looking for a kid friendly salad for tomorrow and believe it or not, they would like this and so would the adults. Bacon and cheese! You can’t go wrong.
