I don’t have a lot of memories from when I was a really young child, but I do remember watching Nadia Comaneci score a perfect 10. I was four years old and I think I have that memory because of the excitement surrounding it. She was young, she was the first to score a perfect ten and she did it in Canada. From then on I was always excited to watch the Olympic gymnasts, and I soon developed an appreciation for many more of the Olympic games.

My children are very excited about the Olympics this year. They have been learning about it at school for weeks, and now that the games are on they get to watch the events at school. I’m glad that their teachers see the value in letting the kids watch the games. They are learning about Patriotism, about sportsmanship and about the hard work that goes into becoming an Olympic athlete. It also takes a love for the sport and the chance to play.

Sports are an important component in shaping a child’s life but the reality is that 1 in 3 Canadian families cannot afford to get their kids involved in sport and recreation. Jumpstart is a nationally registered charity that helps kids experience the joy and life skills that comes through participating in sports. Jumpstart gives kids (aged 4-18) a sporting chance by covering costs associated with registration, equipment and/or transportation. Since 2005, Jumpstart has helped almost 700,000 kids (and counting) get in the game! 100% of donations to Jumpstart go straight to achieve their vision of helping equip kids for life and directing them towards a better future. Together we can help all kids play!

Canadian Tire Jumpstart is proud to have 10 Olympic Ambassadors attending the Winter Games in Sochi. In support, Canadian Tire and Sport Chek will be donating $5,000 to Jumpstart for every goal scored by one of the Jumpstart Olympic Ambassador’s. These Ambassadors include Jonathan Toews, Sidney Crosby, Hayley Wickenheiser and Meaghan Mikkelson. To learn more about the Ambassadors, visit the Ambassadors tab on Jumpstart’s Facebook page but allow me to highlight one of them for you…

Kaillie Humphries dreamed of winning an Olympic medal since she was 7 years old. Kaillie won a Gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics and was named World Champion in 2012 and 2013.
