My family finishes off each summer with a back to school shopping trip. Since we live in a small town that doesn’t offer a lot of options when it comes to children’s items, we hop in the van and drive off to another city where we purchased backpacks, shoes, clothes, pencils, pens, calculators and everything else that we needed for them to head back to school. The kids love to pick out their new items, and I love that it means soon they will be back in school and we will all be back to a daily routine.

back to school

It seems like such a simple thing, but that back to school shop wouldn’t be possible without crude oil. We wouldn’t be able to get to the stores without it, and many of the products we purchased wouldn’t be available either. Without crude oil, we wouldn’t be able to heat our homes or buy the winter coats that keep us warm. The fact is all Canadians, rely on petroleum to make gasoline for cars, trucks, buses, trains, boats and planes. We also wouldn’t be able to do a lot of the cooking that I enjoy.

Fall is one of my favourite cooking seasons. Not only does it bring Thanksgiving, when I can roast a turkey and all of our beloved family recipes, but it’s also a time for canning the garden harvests, using the slow cooker and making freezer meals.

capp cooking

I like that we can enjoy garden fresh vegetables all year long by making large batches and freezing them to use in the slow cooker later, and by canning. So far this year I have canned salsa and made freezer bag vegetable soup and beef stew. I can’t imagine fall without all of these delicious home cooked meals, and without crude oil to make the cooking appliances (oven and slow cooker), it would be very difficult. We wouldn’t even have the refrigerator to store the food without crude oil!

Countless other products are made from crude oil including heat, clothing, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, building materials and plastics. It is hard to imagine what our lives would be like if these products were not available to us. It really is an essential part of our quality of life. If you are like me and didn’t realize that so many of these essential products came from crude oil, you may want to learn more about it.
