I believe the key to eating healthy is preparation. Keeping healthy food on hand makes it easy to choose the right snacks, particularly if they require no preparation. Apples are exceptionally healthy snacks that require no more preparation than washing, so I always keep several on hand.
My family’s apple preferences vary. I enjoy soft and sweet apples, while my husband and daughter prefer the crisp sour type. My sons are more interested in the appearance of the apples and seem to enjoy all varieties. As a Mom interested in healthy and frugal living, it is also important to me that I find apples that are high in antioxidants and that will also maintain their freshness in lunch bags and when stored in the fridge for long periods of time. The newest apple to meet my standards is Red Prince.
The first thing I noticed about Red Prince apples is the colour. They are very visually appealing, and the deep, red colour is an indicator that they are high in antioxidants. They have a very unique flavour combination too. They are crisp apples that are both sweet and juicy, and they also have a tangy flavour to them. They have characteristics that appeal to every member of my family, which makes them an instant hit in my house!
My Mom also had some Red Prince apples to try, and she chose to bake them whole. She said they retained their shape during baking and tasted great. They are unique apples that are delicious when eaten fresh, but also when baked or juiced.
Red Prince apples are only available for a limited time. They are local Ontario apples that are available from winter through to summer, when most other apples are typically in season right after the harvest in the fall. The good news is that Red Prince apples stay crisp for weeks if stored in the fridge.
If you prefer to try Red Prince apples before buying, you can try them at any of the following sampling opportunities.
- Metro & Loblaws in Ontario & Quebec on Feb. 7th and 8th
- Sobeys in Ontario on Feb. 7th and 8th
- Sobeys in Quebec on Feb. 21st and 22nd
How do you like to eat your apples?
