Sitting down to eat together as a family is something that rarely happens these days. With busy schedules and long work hours, families are less likely to dine together and more likely to grab dinner on the go.  Statistics Canada has reported that Canadians are now 10% more likely to eat meals alone than they were in previous decades.

I think it’s time to change that, starting in my own home. There was a time that all of our family meals were eaten together at the table, but over the years that has changed. We eat at different times and sometimes we don’t even eat the same meals. I can see the difference and we are now rebuilding that family tradition and making it a priority to share at least one meal together every day. I challenge you to do the same, and here’s why…

Sitting down to eat together provides structure to your day. It gives your family an opportunity to work together on meal preparation and table manners. Families who share a meal will also share conversation which creates a stronger family.

These family meals can also be a great opportunity to teach your children positive dietary habits. Choosing and preparing balanced meals together will give them skills they will use throughout their lives. Providing healthy desserts will teach them how to deal with sweet cravings too.
