The ‘Eternal City’ offer so many historical attractions for visitors, that to condense 2,700 years of history is a daunting prospect. A holiday to Rome is a great opportunity for travel and art enthusiasts to enjoy grandiose architecture, and to get the best out of a holiday, here are my tips on essential things to see and do.
Famous artwork is available in abundance in Rome. It’s a good idea to make a list before you arrive of what you particularly want to see. For me, you can’t beat a visit to the famous Sistine Chapel. This is the world’s most well-known Chapel that is situated in the Vatican City. It is impossible to find adjectives to do justice to the beauty of Michelangelo’s 12,000 square feet painting on the ceiling, but it is a sight that has inspired generations of visitors.
Other art destinations that I love include the Trevi Fountain, and the Maxxi, where you are always sure of some excellent exhibitions. If you enjoy looking at works by the great Renaissance icons, then the Borghese Gallery should be on your list.
Top attractions in Rome
Top attractions include the Coliseum, which is a structure as old as the city itself and is of massive proportions. Even though the only gladiators that you will get a glimpse of are actors dressed up for the tourists, it is still well worth a visit. Other top attractions include St Peter’s Square and the Pantheon.
Italians love to eat out, and good food in this city is not difficult to find. Romans believe that their food is the best in the world, and after your holiday, you will probably agree with them.
If it your first time in the city, then it is important when choosing a restaurant that you don’t pay attention to its appearance. Some restaurants don’t even have menus, and it will often seem that everybody knows exactly what to order except you. If in doubt, ask one of the hundreds of taxi drivers what he recommends, and go with the flow.
Most tourists have an opinion on what is best to do and see in Rome. The city offers a chance to see some of the world’s finest art, architecture, food and so much more. This could be the reason people go back time and time again.
