In typical Ontario fashion, we have jumped from frigid days to sweltering temperatures. Just a short time ago we were trying to find things for the kids to do without risking frostbite for their little noses, and now we are trying to create activities that they can do when it is uncomfortably warm outside. Thankfully, there’s no end to the ways to cool down with the kids in the summer. Here are 25 cool activities to do with your children this summer.

Hot Day Activities

  1. Take a dip in the pool! Swim in your own pool, buy a season pass to the public pool or fill up the kiddie pool in the backyard!
  2. Water fight! Load up the water guns, or even some spray bottles and start cooling off.
  3. Run through the sprinkler. Water the lawn and the garden while watering the kids!
  4. Fill up the water balloons. Play catch, dodge ball and more fun games that will have the kids squealing.
  5. Create your own slip and slide! All you need is some plastic and a hose, and if you have a hill, that’s even better!
  6. Find a local splash pad. Many communities have them and it’s an inexpensive way to have an afternoon of fun.
  7. Slide on down to the water park! Wave pools, water slides and kid zones will fill your day.
  8. Hit the beach! There’s nothing like some sand between your toes on a hot day.
  9. Make popsicles. Sure you can buy them too, but if you make them you will get to create something unique with your child.
  10. Recreate some ice cream classics at home. Drumstick anyone?
  11. Go on a nature walk. Wooded trails provide a cooler shaded hike and it always feels like an adventure.
  12. Have a picnic. Find a shady spot in some trees to spread out your bounty and enjoy a meal together.
  13. Discover the aquarium. It’s an opportunity to learn while having fun!
  14. Seek out a museum. Some will offer ghost stories or re-enactments for a little extra excitement.
  15. Be a hit with the kids with mini golf! If you’re with kids under 7, skip the score keeping. They cheat. Always.
  16. Zip up the life jacket and go for a boat ride! Paddle boats, canoes, ferries, motor boats…there are so many to choose from!
  17. Blow bubbles, or create giant bubbles, for some good old fashioned fun.
  18. Distract the kids from the heat by letting them help plant a garden. When it comes time to water the garden, everyone can cool off!
  19. Build a pizza box oven and make s’mores in the backyard during the day.
  20. Swing at the local park. There’s nothing like the wind in your face while you swing as high as you can!
  21. Treasure hunt for geocaches. You can even make your own to hide for someone else to find!
  22. Go camping! It won’t cool things down but you will be so busy having fun that it won’t matter.
  23. Create a masterpiece in the driveway with sidewalk chalk.
  24. Greet the sunrise and head out for some early morning fishing. It’s a cooler time of day and the kids love it.
  25. If all else fails, crank the air conditioning and enjoy some time indoors. There are loads of things to do inside too!
