A red door, no more… Behr Paint

•

Here is my red door. Excuse the shadow. As you can possibly see, I painted the trim the other day and managed to drip white paint all over the door, but I wasn’t worried since I knew I would be painting it anyway. My door has been red for 6 years, and it is ready for a change. So, DH and I headed off to Home Depot to find the perfect colour and some paint. I decided (isn’t it always up to the woman?) that I wanted a blue colour that I had seen on a paint can, so armed with my colour choice I headed to the counter to ask what kind of paint I need for to paint a red exterior door. The store clerk recommended this Behr Paint…

It is called Behr Premium Plus Paint and Primer. I told him that we had a red door, and I was concerned about covering it with this one little can, but he assured me that just two coats of paint would cover the red. Doubtful, but not wanting to spend the money on a larger can of paint, I took the little can and left.

Before painting, I grabbed my hand sander and gave the door a quick sanding just to rough it up a bit. I also did this because it makes me feel like the alpha woman 🙂 All women should own and use power tools (get your minds out of the gutter). If you don’t, give it a try! Go out today and buy a dremel, or cordless drill or a chainsaw, and do some damage…you will be empowered!

Anyway…back to the task at hand. After sanding and cleaning the door, I removed the handle and lock, taped around the white trim, put Toy Story on to keep Grumps occupied and opened the paint. The colour I chose is called Catalina Coast.
I did the first coat with a brush. This paint is thick! I didn’t drip even one spot of paint onto the floor, and that isn’t due to skill. I dipped my brush in the paint and held it there for 15 seconds, and that one little drip is all that happened.
I got the first coat of paint on, and I was thinking that the Home Depot paint guy might actually know what he’s talking about. It’s streaky, but not too bad considering we are covering red paint.

I waited just one hour before coming back to do a second coat, and the paint was already dry to touch. I was particularly happy about this, because the local bees thought my open door was an invitation. They were sending out some sort of beacon to each other, and every few minutes a new bee would come buzzing in the door. The new blue door may be littered with tiny bee wreaths tomorrow…

Aside from drying quick and allowing me to close the door quicker, a little of this paint goes a long way. This is how much paint was in the can when I started the second coat of paint…

I did the second coat with a brush as well. Here is how the door looked after the second coat was dry…
So he was right, it covered in two coats. However, I wanted to use the roller on the final coat, so I waited an hour and did a third coat of paint, just to eliminate any brush marks I may have left. Here is the new blue door…
And look how much paint is left in the can! It’s not quite half empty.
I like this paint! No mess, very little waiting time for drying, and it really covers well. I’ll definitely be buying Behr for my next paint job!
