Early this summer, my family and I were doing our grocery shopping at our local Independent Grocer, when we discovered a new kind of ice cream in the freezer…President’s Choice Ice Cream Shop Flavours. They caught our eyes not only because they were on sale, but because the packages were colourful and fun and they had some of our favourite ice cream parlour flavours. Here are some of the flavours that we tried…
My seven year old loves root beer, but only gets to have it as a special treat, so I thought this ice cream was the perfect choice for him. He was excited to try it, so I allowed a mid-afternoon ice cream snack (who am I kidding, I couldn’t wait to have some). Kel was excited to find “little frozen bits of root beer” in his ice cream, and I was reminded of special visits to Mother’s Pizza as a kid, where we always ordered root beer floats.
In an effort to keep the sibling fights to a minimum, during that same shopping trip I bought some Rainbow ice cream for my 6 year old daughter. This is always her flavour of choice when we go to the ice cream shop, and this President’s Choice version was no disappointment. She said it tastes exactly the same. I have to take her word for it because I have never tasted the one at the ice cream shop, but I did think this flavour was very good and I can see why she likes it so much.
We picked up the banana split flavour when my son was having a sleepover and Grandma’s and my daughter was feeling a little sad that it wasn’t her turn. She loves bananas and ice cream, so this was a great choice. We filled up our bowls with banana split ice cream, and sat down to enjoy it. She loved it and my husband also loved it. I can’t say that I liked this flavour, but we can’t all like the same things, right? It did taste like bananas, which I think is why I didn’t like it. I love a good banana split, but I like the ice cream to taste like ice cream, and the banana to taste like a banana…I’m just strange that way!
Tiger Tail was my favourite ice cream when I was a kid. I debated buying it every time we bought ice cream this summer, but I didn’t want to be disappointed by an imitation of one of my favourite childhood memories. I finally bought it a couple of weeks ago, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. It was just like what I used to get as a kid…a mixture of creamy orange and black licorice…mmmmm. This one ended up being just for me, since my husband and kids are clearly not sophisticated enough to appreciate Tiger Tail, but that just meant more for me. To be fair, my kids don’t like black licorice, and my husband doesn’t like the orange flavour. I know…weird, eh?
I decided it was time to buy something more “grown up” in my ice cream purchases, so I picked up the caramel toffee crunch. This was good, and I certainly wouldn’t turn any down, but it wasn’t any different than any other caramel flavoured ice cream I’ve had before. The kids didn’t try this one, but my husband did and he liked it.
My daughter wanted the bubble gum ice cream because it is pink. She likes anything pink, and this was no exception. I was feeling a little unsure about it because I’m not a fan of giving bubble gum to kids and I was afraid I was going to find gum balls in the ice cream. Thankfully, that was not the case. The “bubble gum” in the ice cream is actually bubble gum flavoured candy. No gum in hair or on furniture…phew. The ice cream itself was really good. It reminded me of bubble gum, but better, lol. It became Ave’s favourite and we had to buy it a few times this summer.
Cotton Candy ice cream is a little piece of heaven. I had never tasted cotton candy ice cream before, and now I’m thinking I was missing out on one of the better things in life. It is absolutely delicious. I must have bought 4 cartons of this in a two weeks span. It is Kel’s favourite, and my favourite…and I’m thinking a couple of others in the house must have liked it a lot too because it was disappearing pretty quick.
So now that the secret of why I gained 10 lbs is out…what ice cream do you like?
