I love to read. I always have loved reading, and I remember the books from my childhood fondly. I am so glad that my kids also love books and reading, and it is great when I find new books for them to enjoy.
Kellen has liked Diary of a Wimpy Kid ever since the movie came out and he realized it was also a book. Avery likes it too, but it is really geared towards boys, so she doesn’t share Kellen’s complete enthusiasm for it. When I found the Dork Diaries, I was sure I had found something for Avery. Since she is only 6, she is still learning to read. She likes pictures in books but she is moving beyond picture books and young children’s stories. The Dork Diaries are great because they have animations and pieces that she can read, and she really enjoys having them read to her.
There are two books in the Dork Diaries series so far, with a third book (Tales from a Not-So-Talented Pop Star) being released in June 2011. We have already added it to our list of must haves! The books are written by Rachel Renèe Russell, a self described dork and attorney. Rachel’s daughter helps her with the illustrations in the book too!
Tales from a Not-So-Fabulous Life is the first book the series.
Tales from a Not-so-Popular Party Girl is the second book in the series.
I love how these books are written. They are entertaining and interesting, and it feels like they are actual diary entries from a teenage girl. My children were constantly amused by Nikki’s creative descriptions of her family and peers, and I found the books easy to read and enjoy with the kids. I think the subject matter is probably too old for my kids and some of it was “over their heads”, but they still enjoyed the stories. I would recommend the books to girls over 9 or 10 and they would likely be most enjoyed by 12-13 year old girls.
The illustrations in the books are excellent and imaginative, and they were my 6 year old daughter’s favourite part. We are looking forward to more books coming out in the Dork Diaries series, starting with book 3 coming out in June 2011.
