I am always excited to help promote family businesses and women entrepreneurs, and Cowgirl Chocolates fits the bill. Started by Marilyn, whose family history is rich with character and “cowgirl” traits.
From the Cowgirl Chocolates website…
Head Cowgirl Marilyn Lysohir founded Cowgirl Chocolates in 1997. Her two favorite things in the world are art (she has a notable career as a ceramic sculptor) and chocolate. In fact her first job was working in a chocolate factory in Pennsylvania. Marilyn mingled some favorite memories with some new ideas to create an American original, Cowgirl Chocolates…chocolates with a spicy cowgirl kick. She was the pioneer, one of the first companies to offer spicy chocolates in the world.
I never turn down a chocolate, so I was happy to sample Cowgirl Chocolates and accepted without having any background on the products. Our chocolates arrived and they were in a cute little red package with a ribbon around them, and when I opened the package my kids and I were all impressed with the pretty wrappers. So….we all dug in and grabbed a chocolate based on colour….BIG mistake!
What I should have done, was read the little brown card shown above before anyone helped themselves, lol. Avery lucked out and had a mild chocolate, but Griffin, Kellen and I didn’t fare so well. We all bit into hot and spicy chocolates! Griffin barely took a bite before he hollered that he needed a drink (which I quickly took care of), Kellen said it was too hot but didn’t seem too bothered by the ordeal and I survived, lol. I like hot and spicy food, so I was just taken by surprise. It is definitely a spicy chocolate! I did eat the hot toffee willingly though and I didn’t mind it at all. I think the spicy flavours are much better when they are not unexpected, and they definitely aren’t for kids.
The mild flavours were delicious though and we all enjoyed them. The truffles are at least 3 bites too, which I enjoy because I don’t like my chocolate to disappear after one bite! Here is a list of the chocolates we tried:
