What type of dining set do you have? Does it say anything about who you are? I think if you look around and think about it, you will find that it almost always does. For instance, plain black kitchen chairs may belong to someone who is clean cut and sophisticated, while my table that is a combination of old wooden dining chairs and some plastic fold out chairs shows we are a large family who grew faster than we were prepared for!I am a huge fan of Friends and I always thought that Monica’s table and chairs was the perfect set for that group of people. They were a mix-match of different colours and styles pulled tight together around a close table. Just like the gang from friends… a mixture of different personalities who were close knit. Yes, I know it’s a television show and not reality, but in my world I pretend that they are all real people living in New York, and I’m happier that way.
I have been to a neighbour’s house where they had big leather arm chairs on either end of the table, with contemporary black side chairs in the four side spots. They were nice people, but gave the impression that they were “above” everyone else and their dining set seemed to fit right into that persona. It was lovely, yet a little too “uppity” for me.
Another “hippy” friend I had in college had a gorgeous wooden table that he made himself out of logs. It had matching wooden benches and weighed about a thousand pounds (I’m exaggerating). It fit his personality perfectly. When I think of a bachelor pad, I imagine bar stools, or even a foosball table like Chandler and Joey had! I told you I like Friends.
For me, when I move beyond the mixture of old and folding chairs, I will probably do something simple, like some ladderback dining chairs and a black table that can expand when there are extra people here. I am not a fancy cook, and I don’t spend a lot of time at my table, so that is a good fit for me.
