My husband and I celebrated our tenth anniversary last year. I can hardly believe it’s been ten years since we were married. Like most married couples, we received a lot of great household supplies and appliances as wedding gifts. I think that a decade must be the lifespan for a lot of these things, because I have been needing to replace towels, bedding and even some cookware over the last year. We just recently purchased a used van because our old van died. We bought the old van when we found out that we were expecting my daughter (who will be 9 next month), and while it’s really nice to have a newer vehicle, I kind of miss our old van. We had a lot of memories with it.
We bought our house shortly after we were married, and at the same time we purchased most of our appliances. I had a Maytag washer and dryer set that I bought used several years prior, and it was (and is) still going strong, so we brought those to the new house. I think the new front loaders look really nice, but I am really grateful for my old set that never dies. I remember the old Maytag Repair Man commercials where he never had any work because they were so well made, and that is definitely the case with my Maytags!
I wish I could say the same about the other appliances we bought. Our fridge is nice and still works well, but the ice maker stopped working long ago. Our convection oven works well and the burners are great, but one of the dials keeps breaking. I’m sure it’s an easy fix, we just haven’t gotten around to repairing it yet because it’s not a burner that we often use. My dishwasher is the big problem in the house. I have had to call the repair guy to check it out on two occasions, and my husband and I have taken it apart ourselves in an attempt to fix it. I actually think my husband should consider a career in appliance repair because it has been working great since he took it apart the last time. We still don’t know what exactly was wrong with it, but taking it apart and putting it back together seemed to solve the problem. I’m so glad because I didn’t want to have to replace it!
I think that things just don’t last as long as they used to. Or maybe we are hard on our appliances. With six people in the house, everything does get a lot of use!
