Creative Ways to See the World

•

I used to believe that travel was a luxury reserved strictly for wealthy families. It seemed unattainable  to me as a young single mother and I often dreamed about taking my son on his first flight to somewhere fascinating. As I grew older I realized that I was wrong, anyone can travel with a little planning and creativity.

A vacation doesn’t have to be a getaway to an all-inclusive resort. Sometimes you need to find other ways to see the world. Students can travel by doing any of the following:

  • Take part in an exchange program
  • Teach English at a camp abroad
  • Join clubs and teams that have a possibility of travel
  • Enter essay contests that offer travel as a prize
  • Apply for international student jobs
  • Get deals when you book as a group through student travel companies

For those of us past the student years, we can still find inexpensive and creative ways to travel. Here are some ideas for adults to travel or save on vacations:

  • Become an expert in your field of work or hobby and present at conferences around the world
  • Do a home exchange with someone in another country
  • Take part in a volunteer trip and fund raise local groups to cover the cost
  • Join travel deal sites
  • Follow facebook fan pages of airlines, resorts and attractions so you see their sales right away
  • Subscribe to airline mailing lists and take advantage of seat sales
  • Collect travel rewards such as Aeroplan points to put towards you travel costs
  • If your airline is asking for volunteers to give up their seat on the airplane, volunteer! You will usually be offered a seat on a later flight and a free ticket for another trip, but negotiating is also a possibility
  • Stay in hostels instead of hotels
  • Look for colleges and universities that have dorm space available for travelers
  • Create a travel savings account and commit to a deposit each week
  • Purchase gift cards such as Disney cards, gas cards or debit cards that will be set aside specifically for travel

Me too, but I don’t think I’ll wait. I will just keep taking turns on which child goes with me.

It is amazing how a child can go on a school trip say for at least7 days, you are worried sick but they are having the time of their lives. Don’t forget to pack the spray and go by Vaseline, making sure they are protected

There was a time when I seriously considered teaching English in China. In fact, I even got my ESL teaching certificate. I think it is a great alternative way to see a new place.

I love the idea of the volunteer travel, see areas of the world I wouldn’t normally see while helping out in some way

I couldnt even go to camp in the summer, I gave up highland dancing when asked to join the MacCulloch because they traveled to diff countries. I would never have survived as an exchange student

Exchange programs are awesome. I was part of an exchange program when I was a highschool student and it was one of the best experiences I have ever had. We were paired up with a student and I stayed with that student’s family. I truly experienced the full culture and not just the tourist stuff. My parents were really apprehensive about letting their 16 year old daughter go across the world, but I am so glad they did. I loved it and I still keep in touch with my host family 20 years later!

I have never traveled extensively but my grandchildren are doing a lot of travelling. On has been to Ireland, the British Isles, Europe, Australia, the USA and Egypt so far.
Two of our granddaughters went to Europe on a field trip with their Classmates.
The remainder have traveled across Canada and the USA as well. They just take it for granted .
I think traveling is a good way to learn about the History and Geography of a country, to say nothing about finding people are basically the same where ever one goes.

Wow I didn’t realize there were so many great ways to reduce the costs of travel! Thank you for sharing your extensive list. Many I haven’t even thought of before. We rarely travel due to the high cost of trips, but I will keep this in mind when planning our next family vacation.
