Win a Starry Night Humidifier & ThermoScan Thermometer {Canada}

•

A new survey of approximately 750 Canadians was conducted by the makers of Honeywell Air Purifiers and Vicks Humidifiers & Thermometers. Below are some of the interesting findings:

o Nearly half (43%) of Canadians suffer from airborne allergies, and in almost a quarter (22%) of homes at least two people are allergy-sufferers.

o The majority of Canadians (69%) estimate that having a sick child costs over C$20 a day, and 18% estimate that it costs over C$100!

We have a few allergy sufferers in my home, so we definitely fall into that demographic. Working from home helps us financially when a child is sick, but we still have the added expense of medications and trips to the doctor. Dr. Dave Greenberg shared his cold and flu season tips below.

o Flu Facts – When homes are kept at the optimal 40-60 percent relative indoor humidity level, flu virus survival in the air can be dramatically decreased – by up to 30%. Homes with radiant heat see a bigger decrease in flu virus survival when using a humidifier compared to homes with forced air heat.

o Time to Recover – They might be running around the house, feeling healthy but it’s important to keep kids home from school, play dates, and after school activities for at least 24 hours after their fever breaks.

o Prevent & Protect – Many people say the best way protect yourself and your family from the flu is with the vaccine. It takes about two weeks for your body to develop protective antibodies, so the sooner you get vaccinated the better.

thermoscan ear thermTwo products that can help parents care for sick children are the Braun ThermoScan 5 Ear Thermometer and the Starry Night Cool Moisture Humidifier.

Ear thermometer measurements are preferred by pediatricians because they are fast, accurate, easy-to-use and hygienic. Braun is the # 1 recommended brand of thermometers by Canadian pharmacists.

I have always used ear thermometers with my kids. They are easy to use and give you fast results. This thermometer is ideal because because the tip is pre-warmed with gives a more accurate temperature, and it’s flexible so it is gentle on your child’s ear. Thankfully none of my children had fevers while I was testing this, but it provided consistent results each time it was used.

The ThermoScan Thermometer is available at major retailers, drug chains and baby stores nationwide. MSRP $79.99

Vicks-Starry-Night-Cool-Mist-HumidifierThe Starry Night Cool Moisture Humidifier will keep the air at the optimal humidity, and it’s fun for kids too.

A cool mist humidifier helps keep air at a comfortable humidity to help relieve nasal and chest congestion. Available at London Drugs, Wal-Mart, Loblaw, Toys R Us, Target & Rexall. SRP of $59.99

    I handle the flu season by taking cautionary measures. Most of these actions are Common Sense anyway! Always wash your hands after going to the bathroom,before you eat,after handling garbage,after blowing your nose and/or sneezing,after handling pets,after changing diapers and/or adult diapers,before and after cooking. I also sanitize my bathroom taps,toilet flusher,toilet seat,light switches throughout the house,as well as,door knobs,telephones,remote controllers,just about anything that the members of the household use and touch! Taking extra vitamins,especially,Vitamin C Supplements,eating a nutritious Diet,making sure I am getting enough rest,exercise and fresh Air,and paying close Attention to my Stress Level and making certain that I am taking relaxation moments when needed!

    Cold and Flu season : with three young children, one in kindergarden, 3, 10 months, well lets just say it has been a merry go around … The older one has learned now from school the basics I had tried to teach her from a long while. The others, well, they catch whatever bug she brings from school. Not easy with the baby, too young for vicks rub … and hates the taste of medication (breast-fed baby). So its the saline solution … and wipe wipe wipe noses. and wash wash wash my hands, theirs, and the toys in hot soapy water. It has been hard, but, hey, it will get better.

    We always get a flu shot. Also, when I am out in public, I consciously keep my hands away from my face and as soon as I get home, I wash my hands with soap and hot water. As a result, I rarely get sick with the flu. Thank you for another super giveaway opportunity. Please keep up the terrific blogging.

    We handle it with lots of handwashing, echinacea and elecampane tincture, steam baths with Sage and Lemon balm, natural chest rub, airing out bedrooms daily, tea tree oil for cleaning where needed and lots of rest and fluids. Also if there is chest congestion heating a tablespoon of honey with some turmeric and sea salt and ingesting it helps to clear the congestion.
