Every week (and often several times a week) Hockey Moms across the country run car pools, tie up skates, wash stinky hockey equipment and spend countless hours in cold arenas, all so their children can be a part of a Canadian tradition, the hockey game.
I was never a big fan of hockey. It wasn’t something we watched in my house when I was growing up and I didn’t understand the game. When I met my husband I was introduced to this whole new world of hockey. He had played since he was a kid and he was a minor hockey coach when I met him. Spending time with him at the games showed me that hockey is about more than a game on the ice. The kids learn how to be team players. They learn how to be good sports and respect their coaches, teammates and the players on the opposing teams. I love how they show their pride by showing up to games in shirts and ties. I saw the lifelong friendships my husband made playing hockey, and while I still don’t enjoy watching an NHL game, I will always be happy to watch one of my children play the game and to do the volunteer hours and Hockey Mom jobs that go along with it.
