Mealtime is tricky with my kids. One likes something and the others don’t. Or they like something one week and not the next. They keep me guessing! One meal that they have always agreed on is tacos. I can always make everyone happy with tacos! They are very popular in my house, and now thanks to Old El Paso Restaurante we have even more taco options to try.
Old El Paso has brought fun, vibrant, modern Mexican food to Canadians with the launch of their new premium Restaurante product line. It allows Canadians to enjoy restaurant-style tacos right in the comfort of your own home! This new product has just hit store shelves across Canada in three delicious flavours that are sure to impress –Baja Fish, Steak Carne Asada and Chicken Tinga. Restaurante products are easy to make and are packed with taste – the perfect way to fix your craving for Mexican cuisine.
The Baja California Peninsula on the western coast of Mexico is somewhat isolated from the rest of Mexico, and has developed a unique cuisine based on the fresh and abundant seafood that surrounds it. Fish Taos have become popular throughout North America due to the unique textures and flavours it offers – crispy fresh white fish, crunchy shredded cabbage, and a creamy Baja sauce all conspire together to make this one of our favourite tacos.
Carne Asada literally translated means “grilled meat”, most often beef. This style of taco is particularly popular in the northern states of Mexico. It is traditionally prepared by marinating the beef in citrus juice, spices and a pinch of salt. They are then quickly grilled over an open wood fire, creating a signature flame-licked charred beef flavour. Avocado or guacamole is the perfect accompaniment for the deep beef flavours of this taco.
The origin of Chicken Tinga, or “Tinga de Pollo”, is most often attributed to be from the Puebla region of Mexico. Today, however, it is popular street food throughout Mexico, especially during celebrations. The Tinga flavour is made with a mouthwatering blend of tomatoes, onions, garlic and smoked and dried jalapeno peppers known as chipotle chiles that give it a slight smoky taste. It can also be made with beef or pork.
I treated my family to some Chicken Tinga Tacos and they were a hit. The package recommends topping with avocado and lettuce, but my children weren’t interested in avocado and insisted on cheese. I put some guacamole on mine and it was the perfect topping! I like that the chicken spice is not overpowering and we could add as much chipotle sauce as we wanted to each individual taco. They were such a hit that I can’t wait to try to the other kinds!
One of my lucky readers will win each flavour of the taco kits and a $75 Visa gift card!
