Many years ago my baby niece suffered serious hot water burns and spent weeks in the burn unit at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. While she was there we all tried to give my sister a break by taking turns staying at the hospital and we got to know some of the other families in the burn unit. One has always stuck out in my mind because she had serious head, facial and torso burns from hot oil. She had pulled a deep fryer down from the counter on top of herself. It was a deep fryer that locked and was considered “safe”. As a result, I have never owned a deep fryer and I never will.
I will admit that french fries cooked in the oven just aren’t the same as deep fried french fries, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make and I really don’t need the added fat. However, I don’t have to make that sacrifice anymore and I can enjoy crispy french fries without the guilt.
