Candy Recipe: Sugar Free Chocolate with Seasalt

•

I am making an honest effort to eat healthier, and I’ve almost completely cut sugar out of my diet. There’s one problem with that – I like chocolate! So today I tried out some sugar free chocolate recipes, made with organic ingredients. The one pictured below has sea salt sprinkled on top and is delicious.

I was really curious about this recipe but I wonder why you feel honey is better than white sugar? The information I have is, that although honey is less refined it has higher calories than sugar and still is roughly 55% fructose.
Agave can be 55-90% fructose – that doesnt sound good at all!

Great questions! While honey does contain fructose and has higher calories than equal amounts of white sugar, honey is far sweeter and requires less to get the same amount of sweetness. The honey in this recipe added 21 calories to the entire recipe. Had I used white sugar, I would have needed a tbsp which has 46 calories. And as you said…honey is less refined than sugar.

Agave nectar has a lower glycemic index than sugar, which means it is less likely to cause a spike in your blood sugar. Many people believe these spikes in blood sugar can trigger the fat storing mechanism in the body, which means agave is better if you are trying to control or lose weight.

Thanks for stopping by and I appreciate your comments.

January 30-This Recipe sounds very good. I am curious about the calorie count of cocoanut oil. Is it much lower than sunflower oil for instance?

I enjoy adding salt to chocolate. It really works well. I already use agave in my coffee and I have been looking for recipes in which I can sub it in for sugar. Great stuff!
