Like I mentioned before, I started wearing glasses when I was around 11 years old and I had no idea that I had poor vision prior to that. This taught me that it is important to get regular eye exams, especially for children. I started taking my three youngest children to a Doctor of Optometry when they were toddlers. The recommendation is actually to take them for their first eye exam when they are infants, but I didn’t get this information until they were toddlers. I wish I had known, and I’m glad that their visual health was determined to be okay when we did go for our first eye exams.
We have done annual eye exams with them all since then, and last year it was determined that my daughter needed glasses. I was surprised because I had no idea that she was experiencing any vision problems, but I trust our Doctor of Optometry explicitly and went ahead with the prescription. I wanted to make sure that Avery was happy with her choice in glasses, so we recruited the opinions of our Doctor of Optometry and her receptionist while she tried on frames. I appreciated their input and honesty about the different frames and how they fit. She ended up selecting an adorable pair of dark pink frames that I believe she feels quite confident in.

Our Doctor of Optometry recommended some different types of lenses and coatings for the lenses. We could choose lenses that tint in the light, coatings to prevent glare from lights and coating that would prevent scratches in the glass. Since Avery’s glasses are only required for distance and she wouldn’t be wearing them all of the time, we opted for the coating to prevent scratches. For her next pair, we will get the tinted lenses so that she can wear her glasses even when she is out in the sun.
When Avery received her first pair of glasses, she felt a little out of sorts. Things looked different and it took some time to get used to her new vision. Thankfully that is normal and it only lasted a few days. Any problems that last longer than a couple of weeks should be reported to your Doctor of Optometry.
