Skiing with the Family for the First Time {Guest Post}

You may have been lucky enough, in your youth, to give skiing a go and you may have enjoyed it so much that you pretty much mastered the moves. All of a sudden, you’re flung into the world of responsibility, with the prospect of a career and family life emerging. The chances of care-free skiing would have been put on hold for a while but as soon as your kids are old enough to don the skis themselves, there’s no reason why you can’t get back on the slopes.

Sure, the concept of safety and the prevention of broken bones will all of a sudden become more serious, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it as much as you used to, with the added bonus of seeing the massive smiles on your children’s face as they ski down the mountain with you.

Put aside any worries and concerns you might have and enjoy the adventure. With ski hire available in all of the popular ski resorts, you don’t have to worry about being ill-equipped and whether you’re completely new to the sport yourself or you’ve dabbled in the art of the snow plough, there will be a resort to suit you and your family.

Skiing for the first time will undoubtedly include some anxieties but don’t let them put you off. Make sure you pack the right skiwear for you and your children, including plenty of light layers for all of you, that can be removed or added when needed.

Enrol your children in a good, English-speaking ski school so that they can have the best first experiences to help give them the confidence they need to go it alone. Use tuition yourself if you feel you need it.

Most of all, enjoy it! Being able to spend time with the family is a bonus anyway, and sharing memorable experiences with them that they’ll never forget is even better!

    I’m not a big fan of cold weather, but I’ve always wanted to try skiing. Maybe someday. 🙂

    I learned to ski at a young age, but haven’t been much as an adult. It’s sooo much fun! Hopefully I can get back into it and get my kids into it when they’re a bit older.

    One day we will take a trip…when the kids are a little older, I think.

    My brother loves to snowboard and lives in Colorado during the winter to do it. I never learned to ski, but I’m not a fan of the snow, so that was OK with me. I do love watching other people do it though.

    We live in Denver, an hour’s drive from the closest ski area, and we still never go! My husband used to snowboard, every winter he says he’s going to but he doesn’t!

    I lived and grew up in Idaho and only went skiing a couple of times. So sad…

    I am SUCH a klutz, I don’t think I’d be able to do skiing. But I’d be willing to sit in the cabin and wonder around!

    Also make sure you wear sunscreen. A lot of people never think to use it but you will need it.

    I love cold weather but I’ve never skiied or boarded. Too paranoid. My son is an avid snowboarder, and so far has only broken his clavicle and knocked himself out. I say that because he is a clutz.

    I have never been skiing. I imagine my son would be a chicken and my daughter would give me a heart attack by being totally fearless.

    I never laughed so hard as on the first time we went skiing as a family, the kids were flying down the hills, no fear involved and I fell so many times that I spent more time on the ground than on my skis

    I have never skied yet. It is an adventure I would still like to have with my boys. I think only one of them has even tried it. I know the husband has. Looks like a lovely time.
