5 Great Feast Ideas for Cool Days

•

Our long cold winter has come to an end, but the warm weather hasn’t taken up permanent residence yet. Rain and cool winds still fill my days, so I still enjoy some meals that warm you from the inside out. Here are a variety of delicious meal options for cooler days.

beef-stewHarvest Stew

Nothing can chase away the blues faster than a hearty stew. The perfect food for cool evenings, stews will have you warmed from the inside out. Experiment with what works best for you, whether it be beef, potatoes or other tasty vegetables. While it might take longer to cook, there’s nothing better on a cold day.

Beef and Ginger Broth

Take steps to bolster your immune system with the food you choose to eat. A high nutrition broth with a high amount of ginger can help you to find back sicknesses and keep you feeling good for the entire season. Together with chillies and fish sauce, this dish will cleanse your sinuses and tastes fantastic.

Pastapasta

It has been empirically proven that pasta dishes are the world’s best comfort food. Try a Bolognese with a rich, delicious sauce. While you can get sauce from a store, try making your own with garlic, red wine and rosemary. If that’s not your thing, try a cheesy lasagne. If you have the ability to, make your own pasta as well – it can really make a difference. With pasta, you can whip something up before you can say ‘hey pesto’.

Sweet potato shepherd’s pie

Otherwise known as cottage pie, this simple yet enjoyable meal traditionally involves beef mince underneath a mashed potato top. This dish used to be perfect for peasants working out in the field in the cold weather. Now it’s a family favourite. Why not make it with a twist, and make it with sweet potato? With thyme, Worcestershire sauce and cheese this is the ultimate winter meal. You can even freeze portions of it to have for leftovers tomorrow.

Barbeque

Just because it’s cool outside doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the rich tastes of an outdoor barbeque. Get yourself one from BBQs Galore and rug up for some tasty grill. Try cooking up some rosemary-rubbed steak with some charred red onions. The hot plate will give your meat those delicious grill marks on the steak. If you prefer burgers, try a slow cooked pulled-pork sandwich. That smoky flavour is a perfect complement to cool weather, and a great option when the boys are over.

While the outside world might be cool and wet, everyone can appreciate the warmth and comfort of a good hearty hot meal. Try these ideas out with your family – the kids are sure to love them!

Thank you for all the great meal suggestions. I especially like the Sweet Potato Shepherd’s pie. We love sweet potatoes but, for some reason, I never thought to use them in Shepherd’s pie.
