Get a College Diploma Online #TRUOpen

When I started college in 1992 the Internet was in its infancy. Getting online meant dialing through a phone line, and it disconnected every time someone called me on the phone. Online courses were still several years away, but they would have been invaluable to me. I was a young single mother trying to balance a full time college course load that began when my son was just five weeks old. It was challenging but if I thought it was tough going to school with an infant, I was completely unprepared for raising a toddler as a full time college student. I eventually split up my course load and took an extra year to graduate, which cost me another year of tuition. It was hard, but it was worth it because a college education opens doors.

Even though I graduated and I’m proud of my accomplishments, I wish that online learning had been available to me. I would have been able to balance a job and my schoolwork, and I could have worked on my own (and my son’s) schedule. My son is grown now and he’s going to college. He is working and paying his way through school with a job he gained by completing an online course first. It is great that kids today have these options, and that working adults like myself can further our education through online learning.

I was able to take a look at one of the Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning courses and get an idea of how it all works. The Open Learning Faculty Member for my course sent me an email to give me some course information and to offer her assistance if I needed it. I learned that I can also speak to other students taking the course, so I won’t ever feel like I’m taking this course alone. There is extensive support from the Thompson Rivers University faculty to ensure that students will meet their educational and career goals.

This type of post-secondary education is perfect for students who are raising families or working full time. If it had been available when I was in college I could have spent more time with my son and earned a larger income while getting my diploma.

It’s amazing how you were able to finish on your own! It took an extra year and I’m sure lots of $$ but congrats to you! I can’t believe how many online courses they have to offer! Technology is great!

Great information – I’ll definitely check them out. My hubby is completing an online degree via our local College and he’s really enjoyed the ‘study from home’ format.

I’m very lucky my employer believe in education. I took excel 1 and 2 at our college a couple year a go and I’m currently taking Microsoft word on-line through work.

I received a diploma for an agronomy course 80% online, and only 2 weeks that required on site. It was great because I was able to work full time.

I say Kudos to the Universities that have online courses. My sister received her BA degree from taking online courses. When she started, she had a Grade X education plus a Secretarial Course. Thanks to the Ontario correspondence courses, she finished her High School and the went on to online College courses. She was able to contact her Professor when necessary and wrote her exams at the University.
She had been out of school for many years and was raising two children at the same time.
