Win a #LikeAGirl Prize Pack ARV $40 {Canada}

The first time I watched the video below, it brought tears to my eyes.

No, it wasn’t that time of the month.

I became emotional because the video hit a nerve. I am a woman who has experienced this type of sexism, and I am a mother to a pre-teen girl who is already showing signs of diminished self esteem. Take a look.

I can’t pinpoint when it started or what triggered her insecurities, but my daughter worries more about how she looks and she withdraws from sports and other activities that she once enjoyed. Kids her age internalize everything that is said about them and to them, and a simple “You ___ like a girl” is definitely heard as an insult. It says that a girl is less capable than a boy, which is simply not true.

I am also a mother to three boys. It is important to teach my daughter to recognize her self worth, but it is even more important that I teach my boys to value girls and women. I take every opportunity to teach my children that their gender doesn’t define who they are and what they are capable of. I teach my boys that they need to respect women and think of each woman they meet as someone’s mother or sister. We need to teach the boys now to avoid the harm to the girls later on.

If you agree, I invite you to enter the giveaway this prize pack that is valued at $40 and includes a #LikeAGirl T-shirt and Always Infinity product.

I have experienced sexism for most of my life. Because I was a girl, I wasn’t expected to finish university nor get a good job, but I have proven them wrong by getting both of those things. It hurt hearing comments like that since I’m a girl I can’t do as much, but it only fueled me onwards to prove myself and show that just because I am girl, doesn’t mean I should be overlooked.

Not sure if it’s sexism but when I was working in a salon, I was doing a clients hair. They were saying their daughter wanted to quit high school. She said she told them to keep going or they will end up a hair stylist like I was. I couldn’t believe it. I told her I actually graduated high school.

I had to deal with the harsh words of being overweight my whole life and went through it all again with my oldest daughter, she is big boned and didn’t join in any school activities or sports because of what others were saying, wished she would have been stronger, she is awesome at sports, but todays society thinks girls should be small, sad!!

I witness sexism every single day. Not the obvious, outright, large sexism that you can call someone out on. But little things: People telling my son he’s “such a boy.” People telling my son he’s clever, and my daughter she’s pretty. Going to McDonalds and being asked whether we want the “boy” toy or the “girl” toy, as though girls wouldn’t want to play with cars and boys wouldn’t want to play with ponies. Sexism exists on a pernicious, secret level throughout society. I’m doing my best to fight it on every occasion I can.

When you become a mom, people think that you need to be strong, be responsible and be able to take care everything. When I stayed at home for a year being a full time mom, people think that I am obviously less busy than those working in the office and I should have lots of free time just because I am a full time mom. But I want to tell those people who never take care of kids, being a full time mom that being a full time mom is not easy, I have my weak time and I really want to cry out loud when I am stressful

All my life I have done a lot of snowmobiling and atv riding. When I was younger I was a little wild and I could keep up with “the big boys”. I cannot even count the number of times I took off my helmet and heard “oh your a girl”.

It’s important to me to change society’s view on women because women are strong and powerful and need to rise above the challenges that society throws at us. So many times women are seen as the least important sex in so many cultures. We contribute to society and have a valuable role to play. We shouldn’t let others squash who we are and what we are capable of.

My daughters have always been very active in Sports. They are really good soccer players and good goalies. It really annoyed me when they would get a new couch and the male couch would favour the boys over the girls it would really annoy me. My girls are excellent players. Not all couches where like this but I found that their was a few. Who thought that just because they where girls they couldn’t play as good or better then the boys.

I have four daughters and the most important issue we talk about is being Like a Girl and thriving in that situation. They all played or still play soccer at a high level and believe me, the toughest opponents in the world today for young ladies ARE other young ladies. I don’t mean for them to get tough and rough with another girl, I just want them to be able to stick up for themselves and believe in what they want to do in their lives. This goes for the opposite sex as well, but that is another talk… 🙂

I have, I used to work in a Garage… some people would come in and not want to talk with a girl to book an apt, or pay or anything, so told them to leave go else where because in order to get it booked it goes with me, boss told them the same, it took some getting use to with the older men as they would say Garage is for Men, and yes we had a girl Mechanic, but then they got used to me being there, and hated when I was gone lol

I started work in the 70’s. I saw a lot of it over the years. I was very skinny and as a kid I did not each much. I was a very picky eater. I got poked fun at all the time for being skinny.

I have always worked in male-dominated industries. You always have to work harder to compensate for the bias against you. It is still not fixed as my daughter says men are still getting promoted much faster than women in her industry as well

I have witnessed sexism almost daily in the workplace and am getting sick of it. Cat-calling happened frequently in my old office before I changed departments. I complained to the super who then sent out an office memo to everyone…I think that helped a bit, but it’s still happening. Why can’t we all just respect each other for what we are? 🙁

Years ago I was denied a management position in a warehouse because I was a woman. I proved myself over and over that I was capable, but the owner wanted a male in the position. I asked him if there was any possibility of me advancing with his company, and in a round about way he said no, saying he prefers male in management. I should have taken it to the labour board, but I found something better and moved on.

Since women are the very backbone of society, I think it is important that everyone understands how important it is to treat them with respect (like everyone should be). They should not be marginalized, but rather celebrated.

We as a society, have to show those who believe women to be inferior, sub-servant etc, so that we can truly have a healthy world.
