When I was a kid, I always wanted bunk beds. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t want to share a room with my sister, I just wanted the bunk beds. I thought it would be fun to have for sleepovers, and I liked the idea of just picking which bed I would sleep on each night. I imagined building great forts on the lower bunk and having my own private space to read my books. Of course, I had no need for bunk beds so I didn’t end up having them.
When my oldest son was small, I found some building plans for loft bunk beds and I really wanted to build one. I kept the plans for years (in fact, I think they are still in my filing cabinet) but never did get around to building the bed. A few years ago we purchased a loft bed for my second son, and he has been using it ever since. It has been great for saving space and giving the boys a little extra room for playing, and we even build a fort underneath it a few times! Now that Griffin is ready to move out of the toddler bed, we need to replace the loft bed with bunk beds so that the boys have room to play in the room while still sharing.
We have a wooden twin over full bunk bed sitting in the garage waiting to be put together. I need to get a double size mattress for the bottom bunk, and clean up the ridiculous pile of toys in the boys’ bedroom before we can make the move, but I hope to get that done soon and get them settled this summer. I thought Avery would want the loft bed to free up some space in her room, but she wants to keep her captain’s bed with the drawers and bookshelf…and a shorter distance to fall!
