Spreading Flavour with Sabra Hummus

I had my first taste of hummus over twenty years ago at a popular restaurant near London, Ontario. They served it with warm pita bread, red onions, pickled banana peppers and black olives. To date, that is still my favourite way to enjoy hummus… spread on a warm pita wedge and topped with flavour and a little heat. Sabra Classic hummus tastes exactly like the fresh made hummus they served at that restaurant, which isn’t surprising since it is made using high quality ingredients sourced worldwide.

I want my children to appreciate hummus as a healthy snack because it is a great source of fibre and iron, and it’s not packed full of sugar like many other dips and spreads. However, they aren’t as fond of the red onion and hot pepper toppings, so we’ve come up with some alternatives for them. They enjoy sliced olives, cucumbers and even grated cheese over their pita and hummus.

Sabra Hummus is a delicious spread for sandwiches and wraps in the kids’ lunches. We put together a turkey and hummus wrap for my son’s lunch and it was an instant hit (although I was told it needed some cheese and a little less lettuce). It is made simply by spreading Classic Sabra Hummus on a wrap, topping it with your favourite ingredients (we used turkey and lettuce) and then rolling it up. Use toothpicks to secure the wrap.

My daughter recently became vegetarian, so we made her wrap using Classic Sabra Hummus, cheese and cucumber. There is no end to the combinations you can use when making a wrap for the kids’ lunches.

My husband and I try to avoid simple carbohydrates as much as possible, so we came up with a plan to enjoy hummus as a spread as often as we want, without any guilt. Using large romaine lettuce leaves, we spread hummus and added feta cheese, cucumber, tomato and red onion for a tasty Greek lettuce wrap. I ate mine like a taco, but you can roll it length-wise as well. It is a flavourful lunch that doesn’t leave you feeling hungry. Split one in half for a snack too!

Sabra Hummus features a variety of flavourful toppers. I like the Classic and the Carmelized Onion varieties, while my husband prefers the Supremely Spicy hummus. The Roasted Red Pepper and Roasted Pine Nut Inspired varieties were hits with the kids too.

Sabra Hummus is perfect for dipping and spreading and works well as a snack or even as a meal. You can find Sabra Hummus is major grocery stores and mass retailers all over London, and throughout Ontario and Canada. Look for more information on their facebook page: Sabra Canada.
