Bed Bug Removal Products
Bed bugs are nocturnal creatures that will feed on the blood of animals and humans. This silent creature often goes undetected. Bed bugs have the advantage of a painkiller in their saliva. Most people will wake up the next day not realizing they provided a feast for these elusive little creatures. As the infestation develops, many people will notice tiny bites all over their bodies.
Bed bugs are a problem in many homes. Most people keep their mattresses for an average of 15 years. Unfortunately, this is where bed bugs reside. It is recommended you replace your mattress between five to seven years. However, many people are unable to replace mattresses this often.
Many people unknowingly bring bed bugs into their homes. If you vacation or travel frequently, you may unwittingly carry the bed bugs into your home from the hotel you have stayed. This is the most common place where people unknowingly have additional travelers on their clothing and in their suitcases. Once the bed bugs have been introduced into the home, they spread quickly.
If you have children, bed bugs can be particularly dangerous. The bed bugs not only cause severe itching, but also can inject toxins into the bloodstream. For many children this can lead to a serious illness or allergic reaction. In addition, the constant itching and scratching can lead to topical skin infections. If your child has been bitten by bed bugs it is best to seek the advice of a pediatrician for treatment.
Bed bugs will bite pets as well. If you have a pet, it is important to wash bedding in hot water on a regular basis. If you notice your pet is scratching often, you may want to seek the advice of your veterinarian. Many pets may have an allergic reaction to bed bugs; however, constant scratching is the most significant issue. This can lead to exposed sores and welts.
Treating your home for bed bugs presents a challenge. You can hire a professional service, however, you will still need to clean the home and remove any clutter. The professional service will inspect the home and treat the necessary areas. If you are concerned with the chemicals the service may use to treat the home, you can choose a service that uses non-toxic organic treatments.
If you cannot afford a professional service, you can treat your home by using the following guidelines:
1. You can replace your mattresses or purchase mattress covers designed for the treatment of bed bugs. These covers seal the mattress trapping the bed bugs inside. After approximately one year, all bed bugs contained in the mattress will be killed.
2. All clothing and linens should be washed in hot water of at least 120 degrees. If you cannot wash at this temperature, you can use your dryer to aide in killing the bed bugs. You can also buy a pesticide or organic treatment module that is used in conjunction with plastic bags. Place all contents in a large plastic bag with the treatment and seal the bags for at least 72 hours.
You can use this treatment for computers and other electronic devices in the home. Bed bugs can often be found in many of your home electronic devices. This method is safe to use on any device.
3. You will need to vacuum drawers, crevices and particularly between the flooring and baseboards. Make sure you empty the vacuum bag or canister often. This should be done outside and use a bag that you can seal up and discard. Vacuum all areas of the house and particularly areas where the linens and clothes are stored.
4. If you have pets, you may want to consider buying new pet bedding. Otherwise, you will need to wash all bedding at 120 degrees. If the bedding will fit in a plastic bag, you can use the bed bug treatment and seal the bag for 72 hours. You will want to select a treatment that is safe for pets or choose a non-toxic organic treatment.
5. Inspect your home for cracks in the baseboards, cabinets and corners of the home. You will need to seal any cracks. Bed bugs hide in dark crevices and sealing the cracks will prevent them from wandering through your home.
6. Choose an aerosol treatment to spray the entire home. If you have children and pets, you can choose a non-toxic treatment or one that is proven safe for children and pets. Most of these treatments can be used on furniture such as sofas and chairs.
Treating the home for bed bugs is an arduous process. Once you have treated your home, you will want to take precautions to avoid another infestation. If you travel or take vacations, you will want to invest in plastic suitcase covers. This will prevent bed bugs from entering your suitcases while you are staying in a hotel. If you bring a blanket or pillow, you will want to treat these items before bringing them into your home.
