Hot sauce punishment?

•

I don’t know if I consider using hot sauce abuse, but I certainly think it is unkind and not something I would do to my children. As parents, our job is to teach our children life lessons, including how to be kind and compassionate people, which we aren’t doing if we choose to issue lessons with physical discomfort. As a rule, I believe in thinking about how you would like to be treated, and only choosing consequences that you know you wouldn’t feel violated or humiliated if you had to experience it yourself.

Several others weighed in on this subject, and here is what they decided…

Um, that’s pretty nuts! Although my husband and I were joking the other night that we’re going to have to start putting hot sauce on my daughter’s thumb so she will stop sucking it. LOL Would we ever do that? No!

Even though I love hot, spicy food and feel that Mexican food doesn’t have enough hot sauce unless your eyes water with the first bite I would never drink it and feel it’s abusive to force it on anyone else. In my mind it is abuse. The same way it would be abusive to me to force me to eat green beans or drink buttermilk.

Funny…I drink casually, I make over 75,000 a year, and I graduated college…I support a drop of hot sauce or two on my 3 year old’s lips or tongue when he’s completely out of hand. One use of hot sauce has stopped him from biting others….on another occasion he received a drop for smacking a friend after being warned…he’s reduced this activity quite a bit as well.

Now just seeing the bottle is enough to straighten him out…I love the little guy to death, and he loves me too…
