What do Dr. Seuss and Norman Rockwell have in Common? #XploreMass

•

I have a strong appreciation for the arts. I love the written word, pencil sketches, paintings, sculpture from various mediums and music. Massachusetts is rich in the arts and is the home to many museums and festivals. Beautiful sculptures can be found statewide and no matter what your art taste is, you are sure to find something that you will enjoy.

Did you know that Dr. Seuss was born in Springfield Massachusetts? Did you know his real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel? I didn’t! I recently learned about it though, because the Springfield Museums are honoring him with the new Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden.

The garden features five bronze sculptures (including the one shown above) such as Horton the Elephant, Yertle the Turtle, the Grinch and his dog Max, the Lorax, Gertrude McFuzz, Things One and Two, and the lovable Thidwick the Moose.

I am excited about this for a couple of reasons, the first being that I never completely grew up and I have a soft spot in my heart for Dr. Seuss. I have fond memories of reading his books with all of my children and the featured films they have been making have all been wonderful! The fantastic thing about this exhibit is the potential to make children excited about art. Kids will be able to relate to these sculptures in a way that they may not with other art pieces, and it would be a fantastic stop on any family vacation.

Another fantastic artist is Normal Rockwell. Norman lived the final chapter of his life in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and they have a museum dedicated to him in Stockbridge.

Norman Rockwell Museum is dedicated to education and art appreciation inspired by the legacy of Norman Rockwell. The museum preserves, studies and communicates with a worldwide audience the life, art and spirit of Norman Rockwell in the field of illustration.

The museum is a gathering place for reflection, involvement, and discovery through the enjoyment of the artist’s work. Norman Rockwell’s unique contributions to art and society, popular culture and social commentary influence the museum’s programs and interpretations.

I don’t think I could visit Massachusetts without taking a trip to Stockbridge to see the Norman Rockwell art collection. He was an incredibly gifted artist whose work is timeless!

The opportunities to enjoy and appreciate art are plenty in Massachusetts. In the Boston area you will find the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts and you can enjoy Summer Arts Weekends. Western Massachusetts offers the Berkshires Arts Festivals and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Cape Cod has the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and of course Martha’s Vineyard hosts a variety of galleries.

Massachusetts is the perfect vacation spot for people who love the arts.
