Island Hopping in Massachusetts #XploreMass

Nantucket and Cape Code are places I’ve only read about, and that is usually in the depths of a great romance novel, so of course I relate both places to romantic getaways and new beginnings. I don’t think I would be disappointed during an actual visit either, at least if the pictures indicate anything. The light houses, flowers, beaches and boats are the perfect back drop for couples looking to get away together. Massachusetts has many great islands to visit!

Boston Harbor

Couples or families who enjoy a more active lifestyle can head to One Long Wharf, Boston to enjoy some kayaking. Actually, Boston Harbor has thirty-four accessible islands! You can visit the islands to camp, kayak, picnic, swim, bird watch, and explore historic trails and forts. You can take a ferry out to visit the islands, courtesy of Harbour Express.

Gray Seals of Monomoy Island

The Seals on Monomoy Island have officially been added to my bucket list as something I need to see. Over 1200 gray seals live on the Island, and tour boats will take you out for a close look at these incredible mammals. Combine this visit with some whale watching, and I call that a dream trip.

The Islands at Crane Estate are an intriguing stop while island hopping. Once a vast early 20th century summer estate, the Crane Estate is now a wildlife refuge featuring a patchwork of coastal and island habitats that include seven islands in the Essex River Estuary. The largest island, Choate, is the site of two historical sites: the Proctor Barn (1778) and the Choate family homestead (1725-40). It was also the site of semi-permanent agricultural villages for the Agawam Native Americans.

Plum Island

Plum Island is named for the wild beach plums that grow on its dunes. You can walk the boardwalk, visit the beaches and enjoy the scenery.

There is no shortage of things to do while island hopping in Massachusetts. Be sure to seek out some of the lesser known islands while making your way to Martha’s Vineyard and Provincetown, be sure to stop by Cuttyhunk Island and Misery Island…and check out what other islands you can find! I would love to hear about them.

I’ve only read about these places in novels too. It sounds like there is a lot more to do there than romantic walks on the beach! Lol!
