Why it’s Important That Your Child Gets Outdoors

•

With the rise of technology, parents may be tempted to do away with old playtime favourites, swapping the cricket bat for an iPad or a playground for a television screen. The world seems too dangerous a place to let children run wild and not much can go wrong if they’re sitting in front of the television, right? While training children from an early age to become comfortable with technological advances is important, letting children into the outside world to play like the good old days is necessary for their development and therefore successful transition into adulthood.

The Future

The youngest years of a child’s life pave the way for how they’ll develop in their adult life – both mentally and physically. Playing outside develops essential motor skills restricted by activities involving sitting in front of a screen. Involving children in active hobbies and pastimes is crucial for their physical development, and lowers the risk of series health problems in the future. There are plenty of fun activities to choose from such as skateboarding or rollerblading, with companies such as Penny Skateboards allowing full customization to ensure the safest, most secure board on the market. If children don’t use their muscles, they’re at risk of them not developing to their fullest potential, which may cause them grief as they grow into young adults.

There Are Five Senses, Remember?

Sensory development is also something that can’t be substituted with screens. When children are outside, they smell the scents of the outside world, seeing the colours of the trees and plants, touching the earth and hearing the wind and animals. When children are using technology, generally they are restricted to looking and listening – stunting the growth of the other three senses. There’s no technological substitute for running, riding and experiencing the world physically, rather than virtually.

Social Progression

Finally, it’s vital socially for children to physically interact with others throw activities such as playtime. Chatting online is one thing, but communicating verbally when young is a skill that can only be honed by doing. Plus – what sounds better? Children chatting with virtual friends they’ll never meet, or them having a close circle of friends who they can play, learn and hone their verbal skills on? Conversing via technology is very different to having a conversation in person – and once the child is of an age to be considering job or university interviews, all the body language skills they have employed in their younger years come into practice. This sentiment applies to all age ranges including teens – not just young kids.

Having a healthy mix of technological and outside activities will ensure the best possible physical and mental development, and also ensure they are schooled in the life skills to take them through their later years. Get them involved in sports and social activities, and they’ll not only get the physiological and mental development their body requires to develop naturally, but possibly a great circle of friends they’ll keep for life. Finally, what’s cheaper – the local playground or a flat screen television?

I’m with you on this 100%, to many kids have their faces stuck in the ipads or tv, but then I know of some parents that won’t allow their children outside because they are scared that someone will kidnap them, but children need to be outside to play and get hurt and dirty, it also builds up their immune system

Getting outdoors and playing is so important! Children seem to be doing less of it anymore and it is sad to watch some of them when they do get sent outside because they don’t know what to do.

My kids had been spending hours outside the past week or so when the weather was nice…. and then we have snow again today.

Ugh, I’m guilty of giving them too much tv and not enough park…thanks for the reminder!

When I was growing up we would spend the entire day outside and run inside to eat or use the bathroom! I’m trying to raise my grandkids the same way! We spend lots of time down at the beach!

When I was a child I spent the majority of my play time outside. My oldest is four and I am thrilled to play outside with her and make sure that she stays active. Now that spring has sprung I can’t wait to get her bike and helmet, chalk and skipping rope out! Outdoor play is an important part of childhood, it teaches children socialization, to discover new things and independence.

Despite my girls having LeapPads, DSi, an iPad, etc they always choose to play together outside especially in the warmer weather. When they saw the snow disappearing from the backyard and the temperatures going up, they couldn’t wait to get out on the trampoline & the jungle gym! The snow hadn’t even melted all the way off the patio and they were out there with their chalk and begging me to let them take their coats off.
They are just like their momma and would spend every waking minute outside playing if they could!

My kids got out to play SOME Over the winter but it was so bitter cold most days. As it warms up, though, I’ve been kicking them outside a little every day!

I totally agree with you that playing is an essential part of one’s childhood! Otherwise kids get used to relying on technology for entertainment!

I am always encouraging my kids to get outdoors. With all the crazy weather this winter, it’s been a challenge…but they seem more inspired now that the weather seems to be getting better.

When I was growing up I was always outside. In the spring, summer, and fall. And unless it was really cold or raining (except in the summer, I played outside in the rain) my brother, sister, and I were outdoors. My son does play outside a lot but not like I did…

I agree! We have been guilty of having a lack of balance and are working on correcting that. Adding more animals to the farm definitely gets them outside too! 🙂

Why is it such a struggle to get kids to play outside? I remember when I was a kid, I was out riding my bike sun-up to sun down.

Great points you’ve brought up in your article about outside play. My grandchildren live next door to us and it is great to see them playing on their trampoline with their friends. Its been a magnet to the neighbourhood kids.

I take my boys to the park every day and it’s great for me too. I get to chat with other moms and dads. So it’s socially good for all of us. 🙂

I think my kids are at that age (under 5) where they are constantly asking to go outside, so I don’t find it challenging to get them out the door. I love that they love running, exploring and just want to be out doors.

Outdoor play whether it be playing ball in the court or walking along the beach trail is so important, breathe in that fresh air and use those muscles

I agree that Playing Outside is very important to a child’s muscular and social development. I think experts say that our children need at least two hours of exercise (preferably outside) every day. I know of a teacher who starts each day with her teen-age students on a treadmill. She states that they are more alert and do better in subjects, especially math.
I have heard parents have valid concerns about their children being ‘hooked’ on iPads, whatever, and they have had to restrict the use of these devices.
It makes sense that a child who plays outside, exercising his body and all his senses, will be a much healthier and well-developed perso

I remember when I was going to school in our home town, several of the neighbourhood children would come to a field next to our house. This would be in the early evening after supper, and we would play baseball until the skies darkened and our moms would call us in to get ready for bed. (We usually did our homework after school) and, of course, this was a lifetime ago. I still remember those summer and early fall evenings as among the best memories of my life.

I totally agree! My daughter gets one hr of screen time and thats it! Half hr in morning before school, than we play after school at the park, and than half hr again while I make dinner. I think thats more than enough.

I agree with you so much, especially with this rampant obesity. Children need to play or get physical activity at least one hour a day; perferably outside where there is an abundance of vitamin E and so much they can do

I totally agree. We always had each of the kids involved in a sport, also a musical instrument and just plain encouraged them to get outside. Now different personalities makes this hard or easy. Our eldest was easy, our middle was a bit harder, but the youngest is very hard to motivate to get outside.
