I start each day with a smoothie, so I have had a lot of practice with different ingredients and recipes. I wouldn’t call myself an expert at all, but I do know what I like and what has worked for my family to serve them appetizing and healthy smoothies.

The first thing you need to consider when making a smoothie is why are you making it? Do you want to consume more fruit and vegetables? Are you looking for a fast meal that can be consumed on the go? Do you want to add more protein to your diet? Perhaps you are including tinctures and oils in your recipes to increase your overall health.

Once your goal is set, you can gather your ingredients. I drink smoothies so that I can increase my fruit and vegetable intake and increase my overall health. I try to make low calorie smoothies that taste great. With that in mind, here are some secrets I have discovered for making great smoothies.

  • Variety is key. If you make the same smoothie each day, you will get bored. Keep a variety of ingredients on hand in order to avoid boredom.
  • Mix similarly coloured ingredients. A beautiful smoothie just tastes better, and when you use all orange ingredients, or all green ingredients, you will create aesthetically pleasing smoothies that will also target a variety of health concerns.
  • Mix fresh and frozen ingredients. I love using fresh fruit and vegetables, but it can be more convenient to have frozen ingredients on hand. I prefer a very cold smoothie too, so adding some frozen fruit into the blender gives a great result.
  • Juice dense vegetables instead of adding them whole. I want the benefits of carrots in my orange smoothies, but I don’t like the texture when I use them whole. If I juice them first, I get fantastic results.
  • Add sweetness and flavour with vanilla flavoured almond milk. It also adds some protein which will keep you feeling full longer.
  • Always make your smoothies fresh. They just don’t taste as good when stored.
  • Don’t be afraid to try new ingredients. You won’t like everything that you try, but you will most certainly discover some delicious new ingredients to add to your list.

Whatever your reason for choosing smoothies, you won’t run out of delicious options if you just keep experimenting.
