20 Things my Children will Never Understand Thanks to Technology

•

While cruising along a highway on Google Earth’s street view, I was overcome with how easy it is to do pretty much anything these days. I am going on a road trip and I wanted to see what the side road looked like, so I went online and looked at it. In the same sitting I could find out how long the trip would take and even look at the amenities along the way. Thanks to technology I can let my GPS guide me and if it fails, I can turn to my smartphone. Gone are the days of pulling over to read a map! There are so many things in life that are different now than they were when I was a kid. Here are some things that were once normal for my generation that my children will never understand.

hp tablet games

  1. Sitting in one place to have a phone conversation, because it was the only option.
  2. Busy signals. Call waiting meant you kept calling and waiting until they got off the phone and got your call.
  3. Looking up phone numbers in the phone book.
  4. Answering machines with mini tapes.
  5. Black and white televisions.
  6. Changing the channel by turning a dial.
  7. Watching television shows at a specific time only, on the only television in the house.
  8. Mixed tapes.
  9. The art of folding a road map.
  10. Microfiche.*
  11. Using card catalogues to find a book in the library.
  12. Having to go to the library to do research.
  13. Cranking the car windows up and down.
  14. Renting a VCR so we could rent a movie.
  15. Writing letters on pretty stationary and mailing them to people.
  16. Reading the newspaper and watching the 6pm news to find out what’s happening in the world.
  17. Filling out deposit and withdrawal slips at the bank.
  18. Paying for in store purchases with cheques.
  19. Knocking on a friend’s door when you wanted to talk to them.
  20. One memory I have from grocery shopping as a young child, I know we will never see again. Our local grocery store handed out red pencils/crayons to customers. We used them to write the price of the product on each item as you took it off the shelf. The cashier entered each amount into her cash register when we were checking out, so it was basically on the honour system that the price you wrote was correct. I loved writing the prices down! This is probably something that only happened in small towns, but it’s a fun memory.

What would you add to the list?

*Since more than one person commented about not knowing what microfiche is, I will try to explain. Newspaper articles, research documents, magazine articles, etc. were recorded on film, kind of like slides, that you then put into a reader (looked like a computer) and read. We used microfiche for research when I was in college in the early 90’s.

Oh my this list even made me feel old. A few things I was able to see but never use so I feel young at the same time! Glad I missed the time of the black and white TV. And yes Rick the dialing of a phone, as a kid I would always mess up one number and have to start all over again. It took so long to call someone.

Yes, definitely. I grew up out in the country and we had a party line. Our ring was one long, one short. I think that there were 8 houses on the same line. I also remember back in 1967, I was a child, living in Thornton and to make a call, you had to push in a button on the side of the phone and turn a crank to make a call. It was owned by the Ivy telephone company. I saw some bills years later and they were hand written.

I remember going to the liquor store with my father. You look in a display and it would have slips of paper which would have the brand, size and price. You would write down on a piece of paper with a pencil the code(s) for the bottles that you wanted. You would then take it up to the counter and a gentleman would go into the back and fill your order. Your bottles were then wrapped in paper.

    Great article.

I remember going to the store with a note from my Dad to get him cigarettes. I was about 5. Can you imagine that happening today?!

I remember getting cigarettes for my parents too. I also remember going home and telling them that I needed a note. I forgot all about that.

Pt 17. You actually had to go to the bank to do any financial transactions. No ATM’s. Banks were only open from 10 – 3, extended on Fridays. Not open on the weekend whatsoever.

I got a bank card as a teenager when the machines were a fairly new thing. You couldn’t pay for things with it though.

Would you believe that I still have the first bank card I ever had? I’ve kept it all these years as a souvenir.

That’s really sad but I can imagine it happening.

I was astounded when I found out that many schools no longer teach cursive. I found that so hard to believe and imagine. I read a story about a teenager being embarrassed when his father took him somewhere and he had to fill out a form and couldn’t because he didn’t know how to write.

I think typing class is also a thing of the past, since people text rather than type most of the time. Except for me…I type over texting any day, lol.

When a movie came out you would go see it 3 times if you liked it because it wouldnt be back in the theatres for another 3 yrs and there were no video tapes to watch on later. Some things are better like the convinence of banking now, but I think some things are not as good. There is something to be said for if you wanted to see your friends you had to go see them not just talk to them on facebook or skype etc. And having to wait for things made them special in some ways. Every year when usually around a holiday they would show chitty chitty bang bang or the sound of music on tv and it would be a family event to all watch together as you wouldnt be able to see it again till the next year lol

When I first moved to Toronto, I remember seeing 7 movies over the coarse of a weekend with a friend. I loved that I could see that many movies by going to different theaters at different times.

I remember having only 12 TV channels and if you wanted to change the channel or adjust the volume, you had to get up and walk over to the TV and do it.

12 Channels? You were really lucky. We got CKVR Channel 3. CBC Channel 5, CFTO Channel 9, CHCH Channel 11 & CKCO Channel 13. On a real lucky day we got WKBW Channel 7. All this with an antenna and a rotor!! lol I remember the day that GLOBAL TV came on air.

I grew up with the old Wringer Washer and all the clothes were rinsed in a washtub and had to be hung outside and everything had to ironed. I loved the bag of candy 3 for a penny.

Did your mother put her whites into a ‘bluing’ solution? She would put this piece of cloth that was wrapped around something that felt like a big chunk of chalk. It turned the water a deep blue. You would deposit freshly wrung whites into this deep blue water. It was wrung, rinsed with clear water then wrung again before being hung on the line. The bluing supposedly made your whites whiter.

Number 20 The red pencil was unique to that store, “the red pencil” store
I have no idea what number 10 is. But I also think some things are realy great like banking from home but some things were better before.

Here’s one. Was sitting outside enjoying the weather with the dog and a margarita when all of a sudden “Paper Straws” popped into my head. Who here remembers drinking milkshakes and pop with a paper straw?

For those who are not aware, before plastic, straws were tubes of thin paper coated with wax. The trick was not to get the end in your mouth all mushy and useless. I remember the first time that I was able to drink a complete pop without damaging the straw.

Your list is so thorough that I really cannot think of anything at the moment. One new innovation I like is that of ordering library books at home and just picking them up when they come in at the library.
I think some of the old memories of visiting neighbours and writing newsy letters are backward steps but I guess I am just a sentimentalist.

I remember the pencils being handed out. Ours was more like a black crayon. There was only one store in town and I hated it. It was an ugly store with shelves and shelves of canned goods. With paper bags for our groceries and my job was to fold the big paper bags. Progress is amazing I love it.

One thing I won’t miss is the cost of long distance calls! I had a boyfriend about an hour away in high school and I remember it costing me about $600 one month to talk to him!!! And calling an exchange student friend from England when I was in university — it cost $2 a MINUTE to ring him!*l* I’m pretty sure the $600 phone bill would have been about $50 today! (And in the wisdom of adulthood, even if it wasn’t I certainly wouldn’t have called that much as my dad made me pay the bill!*lol*)
