The Vegetable Garden: Week 5

•

Thanks to a lot of rain in the evenings followed by sunshine through the day, my garden is thriving, and so are the weeds. I have been outside pulling weeds at every spare moment and I think I’m winning, but there are still a lot to get rid of. It looks like the lettuce isn’t going to happen this year, and the peppers don’t look very healthy either, but everything else is growing really well.

As you can see in the picture below (left), the beans are wrapping themselves around the bamboo and the string. The beans are getting really big, as are the zucchini plants, radishes and onions. You can see one tiny little yellow zucchini in the picture below (top right) and some wee tomatoes below it. The bottom right picture shows how full the bean plants are. The green onions surrounding every garden are ready to eat now or can be left to grow even bigger.

garden week 5I love seeing the progress and knowing that we will soon be picking tomatoes and starting our canning. I’m a little disappointed that my peppers aren’t growing, because I will have to buy some in order to make pasta sauce and salsa, but at least it will be made with home grown tomatoes and onions. The beans will be frozen, and the carrots will be too if we get enough of them. The zucchini and cucumbers are generally eaten and shared as they grow. I love zucchini on the grill!

I love your veggie garden! My 4 year old son and I planted some veggies of our own this year. We have cucumbers, radishes and carrots. We just noticed our radishes appearing HUGE from the dirt today and my son was THRILLED!

I know, but the rabbits ate all of the lower leaves and they aren’t producing flowers at all. The colour of the plants is looking a little off too, so I don’t think they will survive.

I saw on tv how bad the rabbits are this year, they must have been really fornicating this winter to keep warm lol.

your garden is coming along really well, nothing beats fresh veggies pulled right from the garden to your table, wish I had the patience and no pain to be able to have my own garden. But yours looks wonderful!!

Looks good. Much more organized and less weedy than mine (both a month ago and now).

Your garden has made so much progress in five weeks that it must be a pleasure to watch. We used to grow a huge garden and iat was so nice to eat ‘the vegetables of our labors.’
We still buy fresh vegetables because they taste so good but it doesn’t make up for not having our own garden.
