Kick your heart into shape

There are many reasons people choose to follow a dairy free diet. They could be vegan, or lactose intolerant. It could be doctor recommended, or it may be a personal choice. Many people who live with digestive disorders have made the switch and it has improved their health.

Most people need a suitable replacement for dairy, particularly for milk. There are many options available, and Canada’s #1 soy beverage is one of Earth’s Own Food Company’s beverage brands, So Good. Maintaining a protein rich diet is important for a healthy heart, and So Good is an excellent source of protein. Recommended in Canada’s Food Guide, fortified soy beverages are considered the most complete dairy alternative and the only one recognized by Health Canada as a suitable alternative to dairy milk due to its nutritional benefits.

Introducing protein rich soy foods as part of a healthy diet can be particularly helpful for Canadians aged 45-64 years old for whom heart health concerns are often top of mind. I am approaching that age, and I have been far more focused on what I eat in order to maintain good health. I don’t feel any different than I did at twenty, but my body knows I’m older!

So how much soy protein does it take to reduce cholesterol? The recommendation is 25 grams of soy protein per day. You can find soy protein in soy beverages, tofu, miso, tempeh, natto, soy cheeses, soy nuts, isolated soy protein, soy protein concentrate, textured soy protein and soy flour, which are all approved by Health Canada. The approval by Health Canada is a significant development for Canadians and Canadian food companies alike, as very few food health claims meet the rigors of the review process.

There are other ways to stay heart healthy, including:

  • Don’t smoke, and avoid second hand smoke as well
  • Be active for at least 30 minutes every day
  • Avoid a high sugar diet
  • Eat fruit and vegetables daily
  • Get regular blood pressure checks
  • Schedule regular check ups with your doctor

3 people in our household are allergic to milk protein. We buy so much So Good Vanilla that I think by now we should have part ownership in the company. lol. it is great stuff -30% of daily calcium requirements in each glass.
