Sweet and Savoury Homemade Stuffing

•

This sweet and savoury homemade stuffing recipe is my husband’s creation. Normally baking is where he excels and I come up with the entree and side dish recipes. However, he did such a great job creating this recipe that I had to share it. Traditionally, at least in my family, stuffing is heavy and savoury with chunks of onion and celery. I love that stuffing, so I was a little hesitant to try stuffing with apples and cranberries but I let him do his thing.

Ingredients:

  1. 1/2 cup chopped onion
  2. 1/2 cup chopped celery
  3. 2 garlic cloves, minced
  4. 1/4 cup hard butter
  5. 2/3 cup chopped cranberries
  6. 1/2 grated apple
  7. 5 cups bread squares
  8. 1 tbsp brown sugar
  9. 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  10. 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  11. One eigth tsp allspice
  12. 1/8 tsp cayenne
  13. 1/2 tsp salt
  14. 1/8 tsp pepper
  15. 1 tbsp apple juice
  16. 2 tbsp melted butter

Instructions:

  1. Saute onion, celery and garlic in butter in a large frying pan until the onion is soft. Remove from heat.
  2. Add ingredients 5 through 14 and mix well. Add enough apple juice until the stuffing is moist and holds together when squeezed. Stuff your turkey loosely.
  3. Check the temperature of your turkey to ensure it is cooked (180 degrees F in the thigh and 170 degrees F in the breast) and let it sit for ten minutes.
  4. Remove the stuffing from the bird and serve!

The Finished Product

He did a good job! The stuffing looked amazing and was delicious. The sweet fruity flavours were complimented well by the savoury side dishes like green bean casserole and butter and parsley carrots. I am still partial to the stuffing I grew up with, but change is good and I am definitely open to having him make the stuffing again. I would be crazy to pass up help with a holiday dinner!

Pair this recipe with some of my other Thanksgiving recipes, like Candied Yams, for a delicious homemade Thanksgiving.

Sounds really good. Will have to give this a try at some point. I think the apple would be a nice addition to the stuffing.

I don’t like turkey but I do like stuffing! I love cranberries in my stuffing too but I’m not sure about the apple.

This sounds like my kind of recipe I love stuffing but we don’t get it often and this would be more unusual and hopefully very tasty. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
